everyone has diff opinions on what makes a great producer. IMO, it's can you step out of your comfort zone. I wanna hear a song and say hold up, Dre did that?. With the Neptunes, 9 times out of 10 i can point out a neptunes beat. But with Dre, he went from the nwa hardcore sound to G funk era to Eminmen, then 50 and game. When u look at his discography, barely any of his songs sound the same. Nas is coming? 30 something? That doesnt sound like Dre at all

RZA is in the argument for most skilled-producer i.e. crafting beats, making work of samples with originality and differentiation etc.

RZA is in the argument for greatest prime run (1993-1997)

RZA is in the argument for best album crafter as producer or executive producer inc. 36 Chambers, Cuban Linx, Supreme Clientele etc.

RZA is in the argument for most influential producer, considering the likes of Kanye, Just Blaze to name a couple and the way he adjusted the soul samples, he more or less paved the way for mid 90s, late 90s and early 2000s sound

RZA is undoubtedly the best producer/rapper (where he is thought of as a producer FIRST and rapper SECOND), so not ppl like MF DOOM or Redman or whoever else

Pay your respects to Bobby Digital, RZArector, Ruler Zig-Zag-Zig Allah, Bobby Steels, Bobby Boulders, Prince Rakeem, Prince Delight, The Scientist and The Abbott

:wow:

I have to disagree.. Neptunes/Pharrell has a signature sound that artists tend to ask him for when wanting a big hit.. But, if you dig deep in Pharrells production discography, he's waaaay more versatile than Dre. And Dre worked way too heavy with Scott Storch.. Storched did a lot of his work too

i hear you and i can't front on rza's run at at all

but let's think about this for a second

dre did the world class wreckin' crew, straight outta compton, eazy duz it, nikkaz4life, no on can do it better, 100 miles and runnin' ep, the chronic, doggystyle and then 2001, eminem's albums (produced on and or executive produced) 50's shyt, and even helped out a bit with kendrick's shyt

3 decades damn near 4 now with his recent work with kendrick

ye was largely influenced by the rza but dre as well too. ye wrote and spoke on dre's influence in rolling stone magazine a while back

"The Chronic is still the hip-hop equivalent of Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life. It's the benchmark you measure your album against if you're serious. But it's "Xxplosive," off 2001, that I got my entire sound from — if you listen to the track, it's got a soul beat, but it's done with those heavy Dre drums. Listen to "This Can't Be Life," a track I did for Jay-Z's Dynasty album, and then listen to "Xxplosive." It's a direct bite."

as far as the 2000 to 2004 goes, i know the neptunes were on top of their game and even before then, since 98' when they really startin' gettin' popular after nore's super thug record. but even with those years, it doesn't compare to dre's run. dre's had monumental albums he's produced and help craft.

from 2000 to 2004, dre was still busy workin'. you had eminem's shyt, eve's biggest record, mary j blige's family affair, 50's in da club, g unit's shyt, obie's record etc etc

even when the neptunes were on top of the game, dre won't slackin' through those years either and this is after all those 80's and 90's classics he produced

Dre NEVER had a "run" like the Neptunes. Dre had longevity tho.

I'm gonna stretch the Phil Jackson comparison I made a little further.

Other coaches like Pat Riley and Larry Brown might have been better at building contending teams from scratch, but Phil was the best at unleashing Superstar potential and managing team chemistry.

Other producers may be more instrumentally inclined that Dre but none of them can match his overall soundscape. Other guys might be more thorough beat makers (i.e. Quik, J Dilla, etc.) but they haven't created the exciting moments in Hip-Hop that Dre has. He's the greatest musical director in Rap History.
