no excuse for moving 8,000 when they both have had multiple major label solo releases

people don't fukks with them like that in 2012, their time is done

:ld:
Partly. They'll always have the mixtape/tour game and that was known

You really think there was someone at Def Jam going "alright lets get the word out and push this album and get them on BET and radio because people want a Wu-D Block album. I think we ship out 100,000 units first week" Even 50, 000 units shipped is too much when they arent that many outlets. What was in their previous catalogue to think they were gonna move more when the overall share of music buyers is shrinking?

What number did you think they were gonna sell?

If I was working at def jam I'm thinking no way they moving more then 50k, and keep it mind iTunes is what most people probably use to download artists they support. But 8,000 INCLUDING digital, is just :fif:

copped Game and Big Boi at midnight from iTunes myself :win:

Even 30-40k would have been impressive for them in this age. I mean was the CD everywhere and i-tunes numbers are even lower than physical copies for albums because people still cop through illegal download.

15k-10k seems like the number to me

Videos always help. Music is a visual art-form if that makes any sense. You have to be able to translate your musical vision into a marketing scheme that peeps can relate to.

Even hiring some up and coming animators to flesh out a concept like what Duck Down is doing with their recent material can pay off. The days of million dollar Hype Williams mini movies are done, but there are still ways of getting that visibility up.

There's no easy answer anymore cause the internet fukked everything up, but I believe somebody brought up Nas earlier. He wasn't even on Twitter for a long time but he gets it now. You gotta stay connected. He also dropped conceptual videos for Life Is Good that painted a picture in the listeners mind about his vision. I think for the Bye Baby video he literally brought the album cover to life, lol.

He might not be the best example cause he's on a major, but at the end of the day those Wu-Block cats have as much cultural relevance as Nas they just have to push the envelope a little harder :ninja2:

Absolutely NO promo. None. Ghost and Sheek probably did like 3 interviews to promote this shyt and it's sad because its a very dope album.

No Father To MY Style.. A Son Unique
it didnt bring the same vibe to the table as it shoulda. when cuban linx 2 dropped, rae sold what cuban 1 did first week. their was hype around it. a true blue wu album would never do these numbers. these guys did promo interviews the week it dropped and toured. im sure they made money touring. this had no hype just a few leaked songs. no vides, no time put in. ghost had another album supposed to drop same month.

if this was supreme clientele 2, it woulda did 4x that. in todays age people dont care for throwaway shyt.

look at ghosts recent catalog

more fish
big doe
apollo kids

all throwaways with a few bangers. thats what wu block is despite being pretty good. its not like its on a major. these guys are late in their career they got that one special album every now and then, their albums are basically mixtapes to these other rappers today. next ghost album (12 reasons to die) will prolly do similar numbers. SC2 tho? expect CL2 type hype. a new wu album (a real one) would do better by a lot

Why nikkas care what Ghost and them sell, when even they don't give a shyt? They pocket the label money, don't shoot any videos, barely do any promotion, and then bomb. They still got the check so what do they care?

Problem is that you can only do that so many times before fans recognize it, and stop paying attention. Wu Block was never gonna sell well, but they could have done 20-30k first week with a bit of effort. IE get your homie from the hood to shoot a dope video, get some nice cameos, buy a Harry Fraud beat, do a collab with a rapper nikkas are checking for (Freddie Gibbs, Action Bronson...).

Seems like only Rae has any business sense. These nikkas sitting around doing nothing while Rae is caking off his own label, making moves with Kanye, making connects with dope producers, having a real presence on Twitter, etc. Everyone else in the Wu except RZA and Rae are looking for a handout.

The internet fukked up the old industry practices and forces people to work harder and use a little bit more creativity.
