So why would Snoop not get those beats for Missionary? Dre still produces Eminem albums. Why haven’t we heard any of those killer beats so far? That strikes me as odd.

The likely explanation is that people around Dre will say that shyt to support ‘the brand’.…It’s pure P.R.

The D.O.C said Missionary sounded like “the Death Row era but updated for the modern day”. They ain’t gonna tell the truth…that Dr Dre stuff is straight booty juice now… for fear of being seen as damaging the image and getting frozen out of the circle.

He’s just one example (Kanye is another) but many fall off for various reasons. Those reasons can be listed if required, but it’s the usual ones I’m sure you already know.

Its just the passage of time. Even the most legendary artists in Hip Hop or any genre have a 5-10 year window of their prime, and after that for the most part their new music is for the die hard fans. Either they try new things and alienate their fanbase, or keep making inferior versions of their prime years, and people still lose interest.

Of course some artists sounds age better than others, and can adapt easier to their eras, but theres always a limit. If you see a thread on here about any 90s producer theres always a bunch of people saying they suck now.

Peoples ears change and how they want to sound, as you said peoples priorities change with age, health / mental health issues accumulate, musical / work relationships break down, and just changes in the industry and popular culture change the way people listen to music which then influences how their music is produced.

Alc & Madlib are a few of the producers that were able to adapt and fit in with new artists.
