Brehs/Brehettes is this true when it comes to your career, and getting invited into important spaces with management, owners, etc. Has not being married stopped you from elevating in your career field?

I've heard this a thousand times, seems like folklore at this point, but I'm 50/50 on this :patrice:

Depending on the job, this is actually quite the accurate statement.

This is only true in politics and it's because of optics.

There are a lot of divorced and single CEOs out there.

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
You showed data from a 7 year old pre-pandemic study. Are you saying that study absolutely applies in 2023?

But the question was not about who earned more. It was about will it limit you solely based on the decision makers perception. That study doesn’t prove that.
Again. It was 2021.

The study shows AT EVERY AGE GROUP, married men earn more. So no, it doesn’t mean single people aren’t getting promoted. But it clearly shows it will put a cap on the majority of single men when compared to married ones. That’s definitely what I’d call a hinderance

If you and a married man are going for the same job, you both might get it but he’s making 10k more for no other reason than being married, then you’ve been limited

If y’all really scared, I think most legalities make it so that you are not going to be asked about a spousal status by management unless it’s in casual conversation. Me personally, I’ve never been asked if I’m married at work.

It’s almost like they can spot the lack of ring on your finger and assume

For regular joes, being (heterosexual) married matters probably only socially at the low level. I can definitely see where it does matter to those that are C suite and above.

My friends and circumstances changed significantly when I got married and then changed again when we divorced.

It definitely does matter for the optics of politics. Unmarried, childless, white liberal woman munching, pro baby killing Stacey Abrams turned off a lot of people.

You have no data to suggest they make more by simply being married relative to promotions being determined by that which is the premise of the thread.

Hasn't kept me from being promoted...27 people report to me.

With that being said...this mainly applies to politics and brands that "family" oriented for top tier leadership positions where you are constantly seen.

Tim Scott and Lindsay Graham have been gay for years and had no issues becoming Senators

@Silver Surfer do you think Tim Scott could become President?

Ok breh. The study is literally telling you that but you got it
So the study state that employers promote and pay married men based on the sheer fact they have a wife. Like that’s part of the formal evaluation process. They study states that?

They won't ask best believe when they are interviewing or listing candidates behind closed doors they consider that. Depending on the companies goals, objectives, vision or structure they may want a family man or they may want a single guy to be able to take on OT and work like a slave. I've seen both situations.

This was very true when I was in the military, it was an unspoken rule that you had to be married to get promoted to E-5, I believe that's the reason why it was so many sham marriages in there, if you got divorced after the promotion that was find, they really don't expect you to do it again but they did expect you to have a girlfriend.

Company I'm at now the two directors in my company over software and automation are nerdy overweight white guys who have never been married and have no children
