I wouldn’t count little brother as the normal southern rap. They’re more east coast in their approach and styling. you can tell they grew up listening to rawkus records, ATCQ, okayplayer, etc.

outkast aint "normal" southern rap neither is the clipse. The south is a massive region bigger than most nations people really expect it to be a monolith

My office lets us play music and since im the resident music person my spotify playlists are always playing in the office. This new kid from NC said to me while Little Brother was playing. "you dont play any southern music" (LB is from his home state).

-I replied "this is southern music right here"
-Him "no its not"
-Me "LB is from NC!"
-Him *googles* "this dont count as southern rap"
-Me "why not "
-We dont listen to that shyt down there, these nikkas want to be from New York

southern bredrins, Is there some criteria to be "southern" I dont know about or his this nikka trippin?

I'm from NC. I been doing Hip Hop in NC since 1983.

There was no "Southern Rap" for a long time so everyone I knew in NC was about East Coast, which was basically all Hop Hop at a certain point in history.

As the other regions started to bubble, everyone I knew here was STILL on the East Coast sorta tip.

Little Brother is a perfect example of what almost everyone here was like before the trap style beat became popular nationwide.

Alot of cats from the South actually latched on to a West Coast ish kinda vibe (think: Cash Money rocking every color bandana before they finally settled on red).

AND

I would argue that the Midwest actually did the "Southern" type of rap before the ATL cats. Bone for instance. (The drastically different tempo and cadence as opposed to the 90 bpm beats).

Anyway.

Now niqqas here are trying their best to sound like everybody else but all my old homies are still making Boom Bap. DJing. Spitting 16s (not just repeating "Yo bich is a thot" in 6 different ways in autotune).

A person that's like 21 might have started his relationship with Rap via Lil Wayne. So it's understandable that they would view Rap a totally different way.

I know, but in the same post I mentioned where their influences are hence why they’re even more out the loop, while being reminiscent of east coast acts

cash money was not doing no west coast thing lol. Wearing rags is a new Orleans fashion thin. When u seen early cash money rocking rags it’s was New Orleans thing. That’s why u would see them with a different rag on each time.

We called them Soulja rags, no color was affiliated with any areas. nikkaz wore whatever color they wanted and still do

Traditional sounding music.

South traditionally has boom bap beats over gritty non-complex lyrics, more upbeat tempo

New York traditionally has more of a laid back tempo, lots of old-school samples, more complex rhyme schemes.

Before kendrick west wasn’t known as super lyrical, lots of piano on the beats, more gangster-culture influenced lyrics
