For years, we had this same argument about the state of R&B and hip-hop, mostly because we have been spoiled by the quality of music that we had for the past five decades(60s-early 00s). However, most of those dudes who do most of the complaining haven't even supported the artists that they do like. That reminded me of folks complaining about BET not playing Little Brother's Lovin' It video, but didn't even jam up BET's phone lines in protest to support them and the video, much less bought the Ministrel Show album and don't even get me started on how BET did De La.
Ever since Mike and Prince passed, I have long accepted the fact that those days are gone and aren't coming back. So, at this point, we have to listen to the classics because we want to be reminded on how great R&B once was.
