Phil Fish Says YouTubers Are Stealing From Game Developers -

Controversial developer Phil Fish, who abruptly cancelled development of Fez 2 last year over a heated Twitter debate, has once again raised eyebrows on the social network, claiming that YouTubers are 'stealing' from game developers.

At the beginning of a series of tweets captured by GameSpot, the developer wrote:

"YouTubers should have to pay out a huge portion of their revenue to the developers from which they steal all their content. [Ad] revenue should be shared with developers. This should be built into YouTube. Anything else is basically piracy."

He went on to add that:

"If you generate money from putting my content on your channel, you owe me money. Simple as that. If you buy a movie, are you then allowed to stream the entirety of it publicly for people to watch for free? No, because that's illegal.

"Systems are in place to prevent that. But buy Fez, put ALL of it on YouTube, turn on ads, make money from it and that's TOTALLY FINE. And the developer should in NO WAY be compensated for their work being freely distributed to the world. Right. Makes sense."

Afterwards, and perhaps in response to a surge of negative comments, Fish wrote "Nevermind" and protected his account. A search of Twitter no longer appears to show the account, which would be included in search results even if protected, possibly suggesting he has deleted it.

What Fish does not appear to have taken into consideration is the fact that YouTube allows for ContentID match and copyright owner monetisation - a policy which has proven controversial for Nintendo who last month announced an "affliate program" to share revenues with YouTubers.

It was revealed earlier this week that PewDiePie earns a staggering $4 million annually from his YouTube gaming videos.

If I buy a game I've paid the price of admission. The developer doesn't own the rights to me playing the game in my living room and if I film that then that's mine. It's a piece of software. if I film myself typing up a novel and the novel goes on to become the next Hunger Game sensation and the videos do billions on Youtube I don't owe Microsoft any extra money because I used their software in the videos because I already paid Microsoft for the software.

These developers are salty because someone has figured out how to generate revenue through a loophole using their software. They want that extra revenue too but if they attempt to capture that revenue stream it would cease to exist. The same developers aren't paying the cost to create those Youtube videos. They don't buy the console, the capture equipment, or computers involved. They just see somebody else making a buck and feel entitled to it.

he's right to a degree

so many people watched games like last of us, walking dead and mass effect on youtube. however, on the flipside of the coin. this is often good promotion for games that would otherwise go ignored.

now upload a video of yourself watching a movie you paid for. or how about uploading a video of you listening to a song you paid for.

:stopitslime: Playing a game is a physical activity that has nothing in common with music/movies. Not the same thing at all. And how many ppl sit and watch full playthroughs of games like that?

To me, all this "piracy" talk is bullshyt. From movies, to software, to games...if I didn't "pirate" the shyt, I wouldn't have went out and bought the shyt anyway so who am I hurting? Now making copies of/reselling is rightfully illegal. Someone watching a full walkthrough of a game should be illegal, though? :WHAT: So if I wanted a game but didn't want to buy it, I'll just watch a walkthrough instead and be satisfied? :what:

I know my lil rant didn't really pertain to subject, exactly, but :yeshrug:

That's makes no sense. You know if I saw the ending of Mass effect 3 before i brought it, IT WOULD HAVE SAVED ME A fukkING HEADACHE!!!!

But alas i fell for the marketing hype and hype train... Wish I watched the "Walkthrough" first and foremost...

This shyt isn't gonna make any difference with Twitch around. Let people broadcast walkthroughs if they want.
