I think the line started getting blurred partially because of sample clearance. Live.Love.ASAP isn't available on retail to this day. and I imagine it has to do with sample clearance. But if you say "it's just a mixtape", then maybe the sample police don't come after you as hard. I dunno

and of course there are commercial considerations for marketing something as a promotional tool vs. an album. there are also artistic as in intent -- whether you want to tell a story or if there's a single cohesive vision you are also trying to communicate to fans and consumers.
