Intrigue around the attendance of Taylor Swift, the second-ever end-of-season game to make it to overtime and rumors of a halftime appearance by Justin Bieber are expected to have driven viewership of the Kansas City Chiefs’ second consecutive Super Bowl victory into record-breaking territory, potentially overtaking last year’s big game as the most-watched Super Bowl ever and creeping toward the broadcast viewership record set by the 1969 moon landing.

Key Facts

Super Bowl LVIII was set up for ratings success from the very beginning—with the Kansas City Chiefs defending their championship title against the San Francisco 49ers; Swift flying across the world to see her boyfriend Travis Kelce play following an Eras Tour performance in Japan; and Usher, widely known as being an early mentor to Bieber, performing a throwback set with Alicia Keys, Ludacris and Lil Jon.

The Wall Street Journal, Deadline and NBC News were among those to predict early that the Super Bowl broadcast on CBS, Nickelodeon and Paramount+ would be a contender to beat last year's record Super Bowl viewership of 115.1 million watchers, the second most-viewed American television program of all time.

Super Bowls make up eight of the 10 most-watched broadcast programs in history, according to Deadline—the 10th most-watched was President Richard Nixon’s resignation speech broadcast from the Oval Office in 1974 and the most-watched program of all time was the Apollo 11 moon landing, which stands far and above its competitors with 150 million viewers.

Last year's "Kelce Bowl" matchup between the Eagles and Chiefs was the most-watched Super Bowl ever with 115.1 million viewers, followed by the New England Patriots vs. Seattle Seahawks game in 2015 with 114.4 million watchers, the 2022 Rams vs. Bengals game with 112.3 million viewers and the 2014 Seahawks and Broncos matchup that was viewed by 112.2 million people.

The Super Bowl stands to be the culmination of an already record-breaking year for NFL games—matchups during the 2023 regular season drew an average of 17.9 million viewers, Nielsen data shows, a year-over-year increase of 7% and the most since 2015.

The ratings growth continued in the postseason—the 12 playoff games leading up to Sunday's Super Bowl averaged 38.5 million viewers on TV and streaming platforms, the Associated Press reported, an increase of 9% and the most-watched postseason of at least the last 35 years

@Roger Goodell told us expect ~200milly

"One of the secrets of our success is we are really committed to broadcast television. Ninety percent of our games are on broadcast television. I think it's the reason why you will see over 200 million people watch this game here in the United States, because it's on broadcast television and the broadest possible platform.

"We'll see Super Bowl continue to be on the broadest possible platform, and I think we'll continue to see the NFL on the broadest possible platform. Twenty-three million people watched that NFL Wild Card Game."

TV Ratings: Super Bowl LVIII Sets All-Time Record With 123M Viewers

Feb 12, 2024

The second overtime game in Super Bowl history delivered a gigantic audience on Sunday — the biggest one in the history of total-viewer ratings, in fact.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ 25-22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers averaged 120 million viewers on CBS, by itself the largest telecast on record. Simulcasts on Nickelodeon, Univision, Paramount+ and other digital platforms pushed the total to 123.4 million. No other broadcast in American TV history — at least as measured by Nielsen — has drawn more people.

CBS says the Super Bowl was the most streamed ever; Paramount+’s portion of the audience is rolled into the 120 million viewers for the CBS telecast as they were showing the same feed. Univision averaged about 2.2 million viewers for its Spanish-language broadcast (a record for a Super Bowl broadcast in Spanish), which would put Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob-themed alternate telecast at 1.2 million

The 123.4 million viewers are based on time zone-adjusted fast national ratings from Nielsen for the linear telecasts and Adobe Analytics figures for streaming. Final numbers and demographic breakdowns will be available Tuesday morning.

Super Bowl LVIII grew by 7 percent over last year’s game, which drew 115.1 million viewers for Fox (a figure revised up from 113.1 million almost three months after the fact). Until Sunday, that ranked as the most watched broadcast in U.S. television history, at least officially. Nielsen didn’t include out of home ratings in its totals until 2021, so it’s possible a few past games — every Super Bowl from 2013-16 averaged more than 111 million viewers — would have topped that number had out of home viewing been included.

Going further back, estimates for the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969 across ABC, CBS and NBC ranged from 125 million to 150 million viewers, with the high end being almost three fourths of the entire U.S. population at the time (but again, those are not official counts). The final episode of M*A*S*H in February 1983 still holds the record for the largest household rating, with 60.2 percent of all TV homes watching the finale.
