As for this situation, I'm not sure exactly how to fix this. This is beyond sad. From the article it seems like it's a small group from the community, as it usually is, who are terrorizing the community. What to do about them and not allowing them to influence the younger generations to follow in their steps?

Yo I would never walk through Chicago the way I walk through NYC. I walk through NYC like im good in any good. Chicago is be in doors before the sun went down.

Bro, you really think this sh#t pops off all over the city? In downtown? Or midtown? North Side? :comeon:

I've been to Chicago on business. Walked around downtown like all the other folks. Even walked around in the middle of the night catching sights and some grub before calling it a night. Just like any city I've been to....nothing happened.

Some of y'all listen to these cacs tell ghost stories about Chicago. I hear white people always talking about how crazy Chicago is, yet they work in downtown Chicago and get on the train to go back to the suburbs. Or they live on the North Side...far away from any hood. Yet, let them tell it, everyday they walk through the "Valley of the Shadow of Death" on their way to Starbucks after getting off the subway on Wacker.

Cacs got black people afraid of other black people :pachaha:

Peace

Really now? Smh. Are they being arrested, sent to prison? Do they not know who these repeat offenders are? Smh at communities having repeat gun violence offenders.

I don't know how old you are or if you really interact with the youth like that but I think you should really hear people out who say this. As a fairly young person and one who works with young people I can attest that rap music is very influential. Rap isn't the cause of all the drama but it sure isn't helping. From my experience many of these kids take much of the music seriously, being a thug/gangsta is seen as cool and the ultimate form of masculinity, especially for black men; it even affects young girls. I've seen this even in my generation. So don't be so quick to dismiss it. I'm often think of that 2pac song shorty wanna be a thug and feel that really applies today.

Today is a new day and new era and what may have not affected you in the past isn't the same for youth today. I think many people shun the idea because they base it off of themselves, like, "I grew up on hiphop and I'm fine". We are not growing up in the rap that is out there today, nor is the music the same. This music not only influences them but serves as their live's soundtrack.

As someone born on the south Chicago and who has HELLA ties to the city, both the nice parts and grimey parts, Imma have to tell you for the most part no. While music has some influence, it's honestly not significant to why nikkas bang. The gang subculture transcends the music easily.

Why? Because Chi gang members low key look down on a Lotta rappers as soft:yeshrug:. There are Hella nikkas that will tell you straight up that nikkas like Chief Keef, Durk n em are bytches

And those are the type of nikkas that the rap game are low key scared and intimidated by :mindblown:

No one is safe in Chicago. Any given moment you could get lit up where everything is going down. You could wake up eat a bowl of cereal wash your face and think your gonna make the 10 o'clock bus then get hit in crossfire and catch the 10 o'clock coroners van to the morgue instead. nikkas can't be living in peace in chicago. If you're excusing this or dismissing this or indifferent about this you're either staying in the burbs or complicit in this shyt.

I'm not gonna lie breh, while it is of course true innocent people are getting caught in the crossfire, vast majority of people getting killed are gang members. Most nikkas aren't actively going out purposedly killing innocents.:skip: Something like 85% of victims have gang ties.

That's why these some of these anti violence rallies and meetings aren't doing shyt. Most of them aren't even inviting the nikkas actually in the streets and talking to them.

85% probably was gang related but not gang ties.... A lot of bystanders get shot & killed out here

shyts nuts breh. Garfield Park and Englewood for instance have murder rates that are almost TWICE as high as Compton's deadiest the year EVER, 1991.

Hell the Austin neighborhood has had more murders than the entire city of Oakland this year. shyt is beyond grimly, got my fb looking like an obituary.
I heard one year(maybe 1992) the Englewood neighborhood had 80 murders in a 3 month span. I heard they called the national guard in.

Im 35 so I remember when murder rates were higher during the peak of the crack era. Im not gonna say that hip hop has no influence at all but the streets definitely influence the music more than the other way around. The break down of the black family is much more to blame and you can hear that in the music

I think it's both. Stopping the music alone won't solve the problem but at the same time this promotion of destruction isn't helping at all.

I vaguely remember Chicago during the height of the chaos, as I was really young but I did study some of it. Like I recall seeing and hearing about it but I was too young to see the whole scope. But as you said the drugs and the death of the family structure helped to create today's climate. Like I said this music is making it worse and we just to accept that and not see it as some unwarranted attack on hiphop. It's part of the problem, not the cause nor the root but it's having a bad affect on many kids.

Anyway I was listening to NPR yesterday and they were talking about this same issue. They were saying how things there are getting back to 90's level of violence. That says a lot. I'm not sure what the solution is but something needs to be done. Unemployment and lack of stable families is a big cause, but how can you control that? How do we get jobs in these neighborhoods and get them to hirer the locals? How do you get through to these people to stop having kids they can't take care of?

nikkas also need to learn how to wrap it up or take care of their seeds. Cant put all the blame on women. Also many gangs in the Chi been around for decades and its a family affair. nikkas have their son, nephews, and cousins around it at an early age. Chi gang bangers are far from wanna bes
Yep. Folks can't understand that alot of what's going down in Chicago is multi generational gang banging. These gangs have been around since the 50's. And to my knowledge, there hasn't been a major city wide gang truce in Chicago ala what happened in LA in 1992.

Yo I would never walk through Chicago the way I walk through NYC. I walk through NYC like im good in any good. Chicago is be in doors before the sun went down.

Lol OMG 10 times more than Toronto. I would feel unsafe as fukk if I lived in the Chi. I've been told that most of this crime is in very specific areas and the nicer parts of Chicago are relatively safe. I don't know if this is true though.

Chicago North Side is safe until you start getting too North like Rogers Park. Or the Puerto Rican hoods like Humboldt, but even that is in the early/mid stages of gentrification.

These numbers always sound astronomical to me and its heartbreaking. I just never feel the impact of all this violence. Chicagoans truly stay in their corner of the city. Meaning, stay out the south and west sides plus a few North side neighborhoods and you're good. These gangsters don't travel.

I say all that to say, Chicago is awesome. Its truly one of the best cities in America and I hate the violence and weather scare folks from coming here. There really is no place like Summertime Chi North.
