i agree that you shouldn't be afraid to take chances, you need ambition and that you should have financial independence, but he's really oversimplifying this and comes off as an a$$hole just tooting his own horn.

there's a lot of resources out there for ppl to not develop a skill and make money. it's just a matter of what drives you and how bad you want it.

you need opportunities as well

Unless you have a chronic illness/mental issues/are disabled or are caring for a disabled relative full-time, there really isn't a reason to be "poor" in the US by 35.
That's not to say you should be wealthy, but at least pulling in enough to support yourself and independent living arrangements.
:lupe: when did you become reasonable when it came to society, income, and personal responsibility?

And the way that the American economy is going it's gonna be a lot of "poor" people at 35

Wealth and jobs are/have disappeared and will continue to

Student loan debt got people out here in pain

america and other westernized nations have had it so good for so long because we exploited cheap labor in countries who weren't as developed. china, india, brazil, africa (4 billion people) are finally starting to get their shyt together and rising up from poverty. those countries have their own billionaires. every country will eventually have the same income distribution (20% rich, 80% poverty) as we transform from a western focused economy to a true global economy.

tl;dr - we were the outliers and we're finally starting to regress to the mean. shyt is gonna get bad for most people who don't understand how the world works.

I agree but, only somewhat. He started Alibaba and it became a success around that age (mid 30s) thus, he's using his own life as a basis :childplease:

People progress at different rates. Life is a MARATHON. The nasty burgers you eat at McDonalds, well, that made Ray Kroc a billionaire and he started it at 52. Sam Walton was old as fukk when he started Wal-Mart. Vera Wang didn't design a single dress until 40. John Paul Dejoria was a broke divorced middle aged man living in his car by 35 with $700 to his name. Look up his net worth now though. According to Jack Ma, all those people should have shot themselves for being broke past a certain age. No breh. Not telling people to be bums. Not telling people to believe in fantasies that they can make stupid decisions all day and be rich in the future. I'm simply saying if you aint where you thought you were supposed to be at a certain age, so what? Yea, you fukked up but, that's spilled milk. Now do better and keep progressing. The average person lives to 80. We start our working lives roughly around 20. Theoretically, we can work until 70 (if we WANT). That's 50 working years. At 35, you still have about 70% of your working life left, thus, nowhere near done. If you worked until 60, that's 40 years and at 35, you still have more than 50% of your working life left. To be feeling like it's over then is silly.
THANK YOU. I've been trying to tell these SOHH/Coli posters this for years, falling on deaf ears. Seems like every day there are threads on here talking about "if you haven't ________ by age _____, you ain't shyt" or some form of this. Who cares, really? That's what makes life interesting - we all have our own journeys. Folks just looking at their own lives and their own timelines then applying that to everyone else

I have literally no idea what you're talking about. I've always posted reasonably, on everything from systemic issues, race issues, gender/sex related issues, US foreign policy, relationships, etc. I don't think there are any posters who would say I'm unreasonable.

I may be mistaken, but I remember you having strong socialist leanings, with several "capitalism is the bane of society" post. The post I quoted seems like a far cry from that.

I definitely have Socialist leanings, I'm also quite literally an Economist (as of the end of this summer semester), so I understand wealth building if one is born in a first-world country without anything holding you're back. Nothing unreasonable about a desire for Socialism, there's a reason many of the most brilliant minds of the 19th and 20th centuries had Leftist leanings, if not outright being Leftist.
