I don't think they're really jump starting the process, they still have the Lakers or Kings pick for 2018 or 2019, the process ended when Embiid showed he's a generational player when healthy. They have space for two maxes next summer, who knows maybe the Lakers look a lot worse than expected and PG-13 decides to join them. Embiid's max just means they have to be cautious because of his injury history, it could be dead space on the cap if he does get hurt, so tying up more money in a guy who may or may not stay could be dangerous for them.

The Lakers could go 0-82 and it won't matter to George. If this was about joining a budding group of stars, he wouldn't have been looking at LA.
