The song isn’t a bad song. It is not a good song.

This is black-struggle porn

Grasping for white acceptance.

I like Donald, but this isn’t it.

Don’t y’all get tired of trying to show to others what we face? Who is this video for?

What are we learning from this?

There’s not even any white people doing these acts of violence

That's what you got out of it? I thought he touched on quite a few American subjects. Look at what's going on in the background. Suicide attempts, druggies m..

It's from the perspective of a black man though. He can't hide who he is

I'm actually confused at people calling this bad. That video was something else, and the song goes with it perfectly. Also saying "the video makes the song" isn't really a negative for the song, since the two were presented together from the jump. Sometimes imagery is needed to give a song proper context.
You can’t listen to this song on its own.

It’s not terrible. But it’s not a good song by any stretch of the imagination. He arguably says nothing lyrically.

PAY ATTENTION!!
tenor.gif

It’s “Behold a pale horse” not a pale white horse lol

The white horse and The pale horse are two different symbolic images relating to the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse in the book of revelations

I like the video but these stretches and forced double meanings are what give me pause about praising DG execution of whatever his overall point was supposed to be ... nikkas were in here talking about Trayvon Martin dad in the video yalll this hella deep!!! LMAO

Yo it’s ok to just say you don’t understand something sometimes instead of presenting these concocted left field theories like they are stone cold fact ... especially with such a clearly abstract piece of art that he just gave us ...

Personally my issue isn’t the video as I think it helps expound on his point tremendously especially considering how sparse the lyrics are ... and that’s my issue with breaking this down ... I feel like he’s trying to make a grand statement on the Roman like debilitating “Bread and Circuses” phenomenon that’s happening in our country right now ..but he just doesn’t really say anything LYRICALLY inspiring or poignant enough to make this really resonate with me:yeshrug:

Idk if he purposely made the lyrics choppy and abrupt just as a thematic thing to emulate all of these new “flow rappers” that he features on the hook in order to be “ironic” or if he just didn’t have the right words to say to make his point more fleshed out and deafening :francis:

Either way I do fukk with any artist trying to push the boundaries of creativity and using social commentary to do so ... so S/O TO DG the nikka is trying to shake shyt up and I likes that

Just more black pain porn.

“Look at us!”

Aiiiight B. We get it from Atlanta enough.

What did this show us?

The concept is barely new.

Look I like Childish Gambino...but this ain’t it.

I agree with 1000% of what you said.

It tries too hard and fails.

Solange wouldn’t even attempt this.

That was my first impression. That many people were going to think this was about black on black violence when it's not.

Violence happens in America in a lot ways. Guns are the only one used in the video in the foreground prominently. The guy has a sack over his head like a lynching so it's obviously not about black on black violence. The church shooting with an semi-auto isn't about what a black person did.
I understand the references, but he was clearly very black on his way to the killings. And the song is called America. So from what I can see he's seemingly saying that black people are part of and even the cause of the problem.

The video being about our reaction to violence against blacks without actually featuring a white person.
I get that, but even this is kinda a stereotype. Black people don't react just one way. Most of us aren't dancing through the streets without a care. That's something you hear racist cacs saying about blacks.

Kinda my thoughts as well.

Don't get what other people are seeing so great here(obviously cacs gone marvel at any depiction of black folks shukin and Jiving and killing:comeon:). From what I can see here the imagery is misguided at best and downright c00nery at worst.:patrice:

Perhaps he’s trying to do a modern interpretation of Marvin’s “What’s Going On” :yeshrug:

No. You can't really divorce the symbolism from the visual. Art is a concept from the title, visuals, colors, etc. People will bring their own viewpoints but concepts are defended by how well the entire picture holds together against those critiques.

Nolan's TDK is very specifically about Bush era tactics. Yeah, you can apply those same symbols used to Obama or Clinton because they aren't new, but the movie as a whole is specifically referencing where we as a society are and what we were willing to do for protection.

I get that, but even this is kinda a stereotype. Black people don't react just one way. Most of us aren't dancing through the streets without a care. That's something you hear racist cacs saying about blacks.

I didn't mean our reaction as black people. I mean Americans. All of us. Latino, black, white, Asian. Entertainment is dancing, movies, tv. We are watching him as the violence happens elsewhere. The next school shooting isn't going to stop Star Wars IX from making 200 million if it happens on the same weekend. The violence will be "pushed to the side."

Saturday Night Live didn't happen the weekend after 9/11. The same can't be said for Ferguson, Charleston, or any other act of violence like them cause we rely on those distractions.
