Honestly it’s something they’ve been talking about for years as a way to make more money especially before the TV deals change again
The pandemic changed the league in some ways that I think were bad if you remember after they rushed the bubble the very next two seasons started earlier with more games compressed when the League was moving away from that teams would have less back to back games and less weeks where they would play three games in four nights. The compression plus the COVID rules (remember trace rules if a player was known to be near someone that tested positive they would miss games even with a negative test) caused more injuries
The players wanted to start the season after the bubble on MLK day but Turner has exclusive rights to ring night when the defending champs open the season at home with pre game ceremony of them receiving their rings at first the league agreed until Turner threw a stink so the season started 72 days after on December 22nd also in that first season there wasn’t going to be an all star game until once again Turner threw a stink so they forced the allstar game past the halfway point with no fans plus that was the first season of the play-in. The NBA did not want the Finals to go past June the next season
So recap KD tore his Achilles in the Finals then the Raptors won in six games after that the new season 2020 started in October in January David Stern & Kobe died they were honored in February at the allstar game the next month March the league paused because of COVID. In July the top 30 (8 teams didn’t go) teams came to finish out the season to up the play in there were more East teams because their standings were more close and there was a two week ramp up period of games. The play in game was in August and the Finals ended on October 11 when the Lakers won in six against the Heat.
The next season because of different rules regarding COVID the Raptors were forced to play their home games in Tampa. 2021 season was 72 games with the Allstar game in Atlanta which is where Turner’s home base is. The playoffs started in May with the finals ending on July 20th with the Bucks beating the Suns in six games. By May most teams were having fans back in the arenas.
The 2022 season started in October and ended in June with the Warriors winning in six against the Celtics. With some COVID rules still up until allstar
Also remember about how guys changed the teams and new guys were coming into the league so many injuries and covid rules (different cities had different rules like NY home team players had to be vaccinated but out of town players didn’t have to and the ban didn’t get lifted until the Yankees made the playoffs in April) so honestly there was an overload of NBA with so much bullshyt that in a way they were able to spin this in season tournament when it was talked about being a mid season thing at first. Also they decided to have the tournament final in Las Vegas to appease the people at large because the last few allstar game city selections were trash except Chicago but that Chicago was during a brutal winter so last season was Salt Lake City, the season before was Cleveland (75th anniversary should’ve been the MECCA), Atlanta (no fans), Chicago as stated.
This three year period was a pressure cooker for so much not even including all the storylines, media bullshyt, the other gimmicks(like the Elam ending) but seriously so many guys got hurt and missed time from KD, Klay, Steph, Bron, Kyrie,AD, Zion, Chris Paul( lost the ability to use his left arm during the finals), Embid, Jamal Murray, Kawhi, Paul George, Demarcus Cousins,Chet Holgren, Ben Simmons, DAME, John Wall,Bradley Beal, Harden, Robert Williams III, Jonathan Issac,Olidipo,Lonzo, LaMelo, Cade Cunningham, Ja morant, Khris Middleton, Giannis, Steven Adams, and Draymond
Plus factor in roster and front office turnover and this new NBA play 65 minimum game to be eligible for awards that the media already play favorites with that can control the amount guys can make and the new CBA rules like the double luxury tax
