haven't read thru this thread in it's entirety, but let me say this

Hogan is the GOAT. his name = wrestling. When he dies there will be national mourning, it will be all over the news. Rock and Austin are right there, and the last 2 spots are debatable Although I'm inclined to give Flair the 4th spot and Andre, Macho Man, Bret, Cena, and Michaels can fight over the 5th spot.

I will say anytime these threads are made, there should be the qualifier of All Time Great POST 1980. We never take into account guys like Thesz, Sammartino, Rogers, George, O'connor, etc

if austin truly did draw more money then i imagine it is because the wwf had more revenue streams by 98 than they did in the 80's... not because he was a bigger star than hogan.

someone compare the numbers pre-hulk / post-hulk and then stack them up to pre-austin / post austin and let's see who really did more for the business.

Ok this is stupid. Lets not act like in 98 WWF just had all these options to draw income. Nash, Hart, Sid, Taker, and Michaels all had the same oppurtunity with PPVS, house shows, live TV, etc and drew shyt. You acting like WWF was struggling before Hogan. They still were the biggest promotion on the planet where guys like Bruno and Backland were drawing. Hogan just helped blow them into mainstream stratosphere. WWF was damn near out of business before Austin. Look at those PPV buyrates, ratings, and house show numbers in 97 then compare them to 98. Thats all Austin.

This can be a tough list to make, IF you're not being biased. You gotta look at popularity, wrestling skills, mic work, merchandise sells, accomplishments, ratings/buyrates during their time up top, etc.

If you take a fan who watched mostly WCW in the 80's and 90's and lets say their favorite was Flair their list would be mostly to someone who watched mainly WWE in the late 90s-now and let's say their favorite was HBK.

Most GOAT lists are biased, unless its strictly personal favorites. I do think most people would have Austin, Hogan and Rock in the top 5.

my point is this this. let's assume that austin during his time on top truly did draw more money for the wwf than hogan did down to the precise dollar figure. the question is this... can one simply draw the conclusion - from that fact alone - that austin was the bigger star? and i would argue emphatically... no.

the wwf was a different machine in 98 than it was in 83. it was already a global brand by that point. yea it was experiencing a noticeable decline but the infrastructure had already been built. austin did not introduce the masses to this thing called the wwf, he merely helped re-establish it as a dominant force.

did he help grow the audience? no doubt i'm sure of it. but did austin grow the wrestling audience the same way that hulk hogan did? absolutely, positively not.

hypothetically speaking let's say you turned a 5 million dollar company into a 50 million dollar company. and then years later i turn that 50 million dollar company into a 60 million dollar company. technically i made that company more profitable than you did but you're still the one that made it possible in the first place. my job was easier compared to yours. you're still the one that "built" the company.

hogan is the one that set the bar. he's the jordan of wrestling. the icon that became bigger than the sport.

there is no bigger wrestling icon than hulk hogan.
