People don't realize how deep of a song It Aint Hard To Tell is. You have to really analyze the lyrics to see what he was trying to say. Song solidified hip hop as an art form and an intellectual/spiritual movement--that's what the song is about.
Deep? Eh it has intelligently crafted lines/lyrics, but I wouldn't consider the song "deep." I mean a number of lines just talk about smoking weed. I guess it depends on what your definition of deep is though. When I think of a "deep" song, I think of something that has some actual profound meaning/story/message behind the lyrics, and I don't see that here. Just seems like Nas is kicking raps. And while the song touches on spiritual topics/figures, and is intelligent - I don't see how the song itself is actually speaking about hip hop in general (he seems to be referring to himself and his skills throughout the song) or any kind of movement as you suggest.

I'm way too lazy to break down the song bar for bar. If you don't see it :manny:

It's all encapsulated in this line: "Speak with criminal slang/ begin like a violin, end like leviathan/ it's deep well let me try again"

All that line is saying is that his raps begin smooth/calm and finish more aggressively. Like I said before, he uses spiritual figures in the song, but that doesn't make the song deep. In another line he's talking about drinking Moet and smoking weed with Medusa.

Wrong. Actually that line is saying that his music starts off as an artform, but ends with a political message. Dawg the song is not as simple as you think it is.

I was unaware that Leviathan had any sort of politician meaning (had to look it up), but yea that makes sense I suppose. I still don't see it as being a "deep" song (by my classification) though.

"illmatic" has weak or boring production is a myth
I wouldn't trust anyone who said that around kids, b. Hating Illmatic isn't too far away from pedophilia and other negative traits.

Production wise it's one of the most influential records ever. Back then how many records had a bunch of producers on them, with each beat fitting the album perfectly? That whole "all star production" thing was started by Illmatic, and nearly everyone today tries to replicate that.

Listen to that bass, lil nikkas. That's what is called a bass line. I know yall used to generic 808s and all. That's one of the reasons I love GKMC btw: it has actual bass lines. Not just thumping 808s that could fit any song. One of the first things you hear is that bass line on Sherane.

It's not a coincidence that he makes all those religious, mythological, artist allusions in that song.

Can't go wrong with any track on Illmatic being your fav though. All of them are solid...

It Ain't Hard to Tell is dope, but for me NY State of Mind, The World is Yours and Life's A bytch tie for the best tracks off Illmatic.

Also? This version of It Ain't Hard To Tell is dope too

never got the hate for one time for .......... too many quotables and love the onorthodox sounding production!!!!!:king:

What I've noticed about one time for your mind is that it didn't age as well as the rest of the album. When I listen to illmatic that is the only song I will skip. Not a bad song but not on the level of greatness the rest of the album is

this is a great song to introduce anyone who has never heard nas or isnt that familar with him. he pretty much breaks down who he is as an artist

if there is one song that is a microcosm of nas work this is it

It ain't hard to tell, I excel, then prevail
The mic is contacted, I attract clientele
My mic check is life or death, breathin a sniper's breath
I exhale the yellow smoke of buddha through righteous steps
Deep like The Shinin', sparkle like a diamond
Sneak a uzi on the island in my army jacket linin
Hit the Earth like a comet, invasion
Nas is like the Afrocentric Asian, half-man, half-amazin
Cause in my physical, I can express through song
Delete stress like Motrin, then extend strong
I drank Moet with Medusa, give her shotguns in hell
From the spliff that I lift and inhale, it ain't hard to tell

The buddha monk's in your trunk, turn the bass up
Not stories by Aesop, place your loot up, parties I shoot up
Nas, I analyze, drop a jew-el, inhale from the L
School a fool well, you feel it like braille
It ain't hard to tell, I kick a skill like Shaquille holds a pill
Vocabulary spills I'm +Ill+
plus +Matic+, I freak beats slam it like Iron Shiek
Jam like a tech with correct techniques
So analyze me, surprise me, but can't magmatize me
Scannin while you're plannin ways to sabotage me
I leave em froze like her-on in your nose
Nas'll rock well, it ain't hard to tell

This rhythmatic explosion, is what your frame of mind has chosen
I'll leave your brain stimulated, nikkaz is frozen
Speak with criminal slang, begin like a violin
End like Leviathan, it's deep well let me try again
Wisdom be leakin out my grapefruit troop
I dominate break loops, givin mics men-e-straul cycles
Street's disciple, I rock beats that's mega trifle
And groovy but smoother than moves by Villanova
You're still a soldier, I'm like Sly Stone in Cobra
Packin like a rasta in the weed spot
Vocals'll squeeze glocks, MC's eavesdrop
Though they need not to sneak
My poetry's deep, I never fell
Nas's raps should be locked in a cell
It ain't hard to tell
