MEXICO CITY (TND) —
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador warned Sunday a migrant influx will continue through the U.S.-Mexico border if the White House fails to address what he perceives as the inflow’s root causes.

López Obrador projected in a "60 Minutes" interview an unwillingness by the U.S. to provide work visas to immigrants living within its borders and supply $20 billion in aid to Latin American countries would result in the perpetuation of migration’s rapid rate.

“We do want for the root causes to be attended to, for them to be seriously looked at,” he said, adding that "the flow of migrants will continue" if that is not accomplished.
United States being held up by Mexico is wild. 😐 Giving $100s of billions to Ukraine instead.

$20 billion to Latin countries doesn't seem like a big ask considering the Ukraine aid. But who knows if they would stick to their word.

He’s feeling bold because Mexico is overtaking China as the largest exporter to the US. The US needs Mexico more than they have in decades.

Mexico overtakes China as the leading source of goods imported by US

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said this week that the trade status gives Mexico new leverage, saying it would make it hard for the U.S. to close the two countries’ border to limit immigration, as suggested in negotiations on a border bill in the U.S. Senate.
Derek Scissors, a China specialist at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, noted that the biggest drops in Chinese imports were in computers and electronics and chemicals and pharmaceuticals — all politically sensitive categories.

“I don’t see the U.S. being comfortable with a rebound in those areas in 2024 and 2025,” Scissors said, predicting that the China-Mexico reversal on imports to the United States likely “is not a one-year blip.’'

I have a feeling this reliance on Mexico is going to be a long term disaster. I don’t see it ending well for the US. A cartel ran government, where everything and everyone can be bought? No thanks. The Chinese are already creating factories in Mexico to benefit from Mexicos trade status and they have their fingerprints all over the fentanyl trade (precursor chemicals).

Regardless, US has to play ball with Mexico on this right now, imo.
