This the perfect example of what happened to the boom bap era in hip hop.
I base it on a number of things.
- More substance in the lyrics: Compare their last albums for example ASAP had a song called LSD(self explanitory)...meanwhile Saigon had a song called "Lets Get Smart" denouncing the acceptance of things that are dumbed down in this social media era. Saigon destroyed his relationship with Atlantic records because he didnt wanna do songs about sex and selling drugs. That alone puts him in a category of substance over style which is highly respectable.
- Originality: Saigon came in the game refusing to rap about coke/selling drugs(keep in mind he actually sold dope but refuses to rap about it because its wreckless and irresponsible) while ASAP goes with what all the other rappers do when it comes to rapping about selling dope. ASAp came in the game doing screw with that song "Goldie" Asap was the embodiment of NY rappers who had to jack the south to make noise . Meanhwile Saigon in the early 2000's sh*tted on NY rappers who adopt that southern style. Also....Asap alligns himself with a Cali gang while Saigon came in the gang sh*tting on NYers who allign themselves with Cali gangs. Keep in mind..Saigon was the 1st rapper to use his music to openly denounce NYers with Cali gang affiliation back in 2002. And there wasnt too many NYers(let alone rappers) who took such a stance.
-Saigon is 10X verbally better...
- Promotion of manhood: ASAp rocks dresses and tight pants while Saigon rocks that rugged 90's look and looks down on men who go to prison and turn gay while inside.
- More gangster: Only rapper I know to constantly take shots at Jay Z and his wife yet Jay Z still jumped on a song with him all after the fact.
Also...Saigon Can put together a quality CD from front to back. Yardfather 1, Warning Shots, Greatest Story Never Told are 3 examples of this.

This pretty much sums it up for me. Its funny because I heard Float come on shuffle for the first time in a while the other day and had to put it on repeat, mainly for the beat though. Hes one of those dudes that rap cocky as fukk but aint really got the skills to back up the arrogance.

Termanology was a rapper I was never interested in listening to even as a fan of that "real hip-hop" it was so contrived and forced that it turned me off.

1. Judging ASAP Rocky based on "LSD" is a little silly. First of all, it aint even a hip hop record and secondly, Rocky rarely makes songs in that style. It's not fair to judge rappers on one-offs.
2. Substance is about depth/insight into your material of choice, not 'positive' vs 'negative'. Yes the topic of LSD is lighter than hood pain, but both tracks are surface-level. I can't think of many rap songs about LSD but just about every rapper has echoed the same sentiments Saigon says. "if Pac was here blah blah blah" Generic shyt.
Besides, do you apply your 'no selling sex and drugs' policy to your favorite rappers, or is this a fake outrage kinda thing?

Saigon isn't the first rapper to come into rap and not rap about "ill shyt." Names don't come to mind because the rappers that rely on "I aint doing that" tend not to last very long.
And even if he were, how does this make his music original? It doesn't. Originality comes down primarily to your beat selection and how you deliver your vocals. In third place, your intellectual angle (rhyme content). Saying you don't do something doesn't mean much. and has minimal effect on your intellectual angle unless you said "I don't do this, but I do this...." It's more important what you actually do and why it's interesting.
nope. Goldie was much later. And that was Rocky watering himself down (getting HitBoy) to appeal to so-called hip hop heads who didn't understand Clams Casino's music.

nah. Saigon is a basic ass rapper. He has never said anything that's made me flip. Neither has Rocky. So they're equal to me.
also, Saigon should worry about not being vocally ass (which is far more important). Rocky's vocal delivery is way, way ahead.

TBH, after him appearing on Entourage I was always puzzled why he didn't blow up...he really did have next back in the day. He had the possibility of taking over 50's spot.
