Now who else wanna fukk with Hollywood Court?
YO fam, do you speak the languages in those places you've lived at?

Is it important to learn the local language to live in Latin America?

And how did you learn the languages, if you know 'em?

I can speak Spanish decently, my Portuguese used to be passable but I don't speak it on a day to day basis so it's pretty much :ld: My woman speaks Spanish, French and Portuguese so she'll say some stuff to me sometimes but for the most part you gotta speak it regularly to keep it.

I learned Spanish living around a lot of Puerto Ricans and Dominicans growing up, you hear it everyday as a kid from friends and in their homes and you start to pick it up. I learned Portuguese on my own from going to Brazil enough times that I wanted to learn and put effort into it.

Unless you plan on finding someone there that speaks English it's critical to learn the languages, Spanish is easy but Portuguese can be a little :ld: to pick diacritics up, it has a lot of similarities to Spanish and a good amount of common words but then you have a bunch of words with X's and diacritics which can be a pain in the ass at first. If you learn Portuguese first you can learn Spanish much easier than vice versa.

Learning Portuguese as your second language is :francis:

The sentence structure just doesn't make sense

How's your Spanish?

You have any Brazilian BBQs nearby? Just go to them and practice if you can.

I don't know any spanish...just english and a lil portuguese. We have some brazilian events in DC you are right, I need to hit them up. I'm in the group just never show up.

Spanish and Portuguese are similar, just listen to some slow Spanish online and you'll notice they use a lot of similar words and structure. Those romance languages are easy to pick up for people that have a base already in one :francis:

Definitely attend some of those events and talk to as many people as you can in Portuguese.

Maybe you don't want to buy and renting with the option to buy later is your thing -

Fully furnished 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom, doorman building + fitness room on the beach for $413 a month in Santa Marta, Colombia. You can find even cheaper places that are right outside the cities, in both of these cases you'd be able to make around $1200 a month teaching English (25 hours a week), the average Colombian makes $8300 a year.

What's the crime statistics like though? How fast is their internet?

No idea how fast their internet is, I'd imagine you'd pay less per MB there than here though.

Can't find anything on Santa Marta totals, but this is from last year:
The cities with the highest number of homicides were Cali (1,989), Bogota (1,283), Medellin (924), Barranquilla (319), and Cucuta (280).

Barranquilla has a population of 1.2 million or so people, only 319 murders and you can find furnished apartments there as well. I prefer Barranquilla over Santa Marta...

So if someone were considering to seriously live there you'd recommend Barranquilla over Santa Marta?

Where are some good places to find rental properties besides craig's list? (just window shopping)

Easily, Barranquilla is more of a world city than Santa Marta, better food, better looking women, only thing worse are the beaches. If you don't care about beaches you can also look at Medellin.

Honestly, the best place would be in country since you could get deals from locals rather than real estate listings, but you can check this site -

Colombia Real Estate, Residential For Rent in Colombia on www.century21global.com

(This is to buy, you'd find this same place for probably 2/3 of that price locally)

I see a lot of people shocked at the cost of some of these homes/condos in other countries, so this thread is to highlight just how far the dollar you have can go. Rather than buying that new whip you could realistically buy a home abroad and rent it out on AirBnB while you're not there, or retire there before 40, teach English part-time and make more than the average citizen living there.

This is what $90,000 will get you in Barranquilla, Colombia.

3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 1200 square feet and about a mile from the beach in one of South Americas safest cities.

Everything is cheaper, for example I took a shytty city like Rochester which has a low cost of living in comparison to the rest of NY
