Also, hip-hop is one of the few music industries that "gets it." Mixtapes are often better than actual albums and make artists more money, AND they're free.
Hip-hop :blessed:

Gucci made 10 mil off mixtapes alone. You don't need no fukking corporation.

If other genres made mixtapes, shyt would change.

If CD's were cheaper they might sell a little more - they still want over 10 bucks for most. I still don't mind buying a CD every now and then - I would actually try out some different music if they still weren't so expensive.

It's crazy to me that they even sold that many copies. Music's free now, like it should be. Music makers will start competing over quality than over money. There should be an epoch of good music coming soon.

This one of the the dumbest statements. Music should not be free. It's a profession too. People need to eat. What they create is an intangible thing that the public enjoy. It's intellectual property.

Tell u what. If musicians aren't making money, then there will not be an epoch of good music, because musicians won't be able to survive.

Read the 2013 year end soundscan report. Album sales are low...but singles sales and money from streaming is close to making up for it
This what i wanted to ask. How are singlrs sales doing? What about tours? What about the ad money websites like datpiff and livemixtapes
doing? I could see a label making an exclusive datpiff for their artist. What about dites like Spltify and Pandora how are theyre supbscriptions going? Also how have Hip-Hop sales gone last year compared to other genre. Besides Pop and Rap what other genre is churning out new superstars on the regular?

You are the only one in this thread that's hitting the right points.

Judging the health of the music industry on album sales is archaic and if the Industry was still depending on album sales there wouldn't be a music industry anymore
Not surprising

90% of music is horrible now

Television is already free technically, we just decide to use cable, satellite, netflix. Local channels are free and only survive through advertisement payment.

As long as there are advertisers involved and employees to be paid, TV and movies will not be free. Like cats have said, it costs millions to make shows and the money is going to be recouped somehow someway.

Also, for anyone in here saying how they aren't buying music or saying that the last album they bought was (insert album name) think about that the next time you complain about the game and the type of music the game is producing or why certain artists aren't given the limelight or spot that other artists are. Yeah artists can make money off of tours but if you're signed to a label and your album is going wood, chances are you're signed to a 360 deal so that money you would be making from the tour, the label is getting a great chunk of that as opposed to before where they wouldn't. I'm of the mind that none of it should be free but definitely fairly priced and of the mind that physical music should :camby:(except for vinyl) but in no way do I feel it should be free.

The movie industry hasn't taken the same hit though because they continue to have record breaking years, chiefly based on summer blockbusters and higher ticket prices but there are a lot of moviegoers that aren't into the illegal life. In a way, they may feel like bootlegging a movie is tougher and riskier than bootlegging music
