As an African I've never seen this shyt...this is news to me. In fact I and other Africans I know have often gotten the opposite reaction from white people with negative stereotypes and complete ignorance

I'm a black Brit and we don't need Affirmative Action to excel. Our level of degree attainment (higher education) is currently twice that of white Brits without it. I doubt you can say the same even with your Affirmative Action.

The census gives the option African American OR black, not just African American.

The OR indicates people that aren't AA but still have African ancestry.


That's the box I check. I think a couple times I picked other or n/a.

This was the 2010 (most recent) Census Form

AA, Black, and Negro all on the same box since 1990.

But I was more refering to other documents like job/college/grant applications etc. Things that are used to collect demographic data in between the 10 years for the US census.

How would you feel about drawing that distinction yourself by selecting "other" instead of African American on documentation that asks for your ethnicity?

There are a few initiatives for this actually.

My friend is working with a rep at the US Census -- as well as some additional contacts/resources to have it added on the 2020 Census.

They are also trying to add some type of additional verification system/process.

A campaign and website is supposed to be released this Spring. I know he is working with HBCU's, black media/social and grassroot orgs.

Will post when it's released.

The white people i was around when we first moved to the U.S were evenglical christians. They were real nice in a patronizing way to my family. The more that me and my siblings started to assimilate to AA lifestyle and culture, the more they started to treat us differently. It's like the African/Kenyan novelty wore off with the quickness.

Sometimes I wish I didn't lose my Kenyan accent. That shyt can come in handy in disarming whites.
