What are some "Industry Plants" that didn't work out?

im still @ the idea of Smoke DZA being a plant. Like a label was like Look at this monotone New York weed rapper who looks like a regular guy, we should really get behind this guy, he's our next star

Chance can't be a plant because he's not signed to any label. He's 100% indie.

Odd Future aren't plants. Tyler was on the Hypebeast forums posting music for a while. They blew up largely because of his skill as a video director. Once he put visuals out they took off. His first album was on an indie label.

What really happens is that these artists release music online, create a following, and get scooped up by a manager who already has connections.

Cudi got scooped up by Plain Pat who was in Kanye's circle.

Chance for scooped up by Donald Glover's manager and toured with him, meet TDE, etc.

OF got scooped up by Clancy who got them more shows and publicity.

A plant isn't just a rapper pushed by labels. Interscope/Aftermath pushed the fukk out of game when he dropped, but Game wasn't really a plant. it was transparent, Interscope was openly telling you "this is our next rap star, we're putting everything behind him". Cac hipsters especially like "discovering" a hot new rapper, so they've been going a different route with promoting new rappers lately.
