I wonder where this 10k steps a day thing came from. This seems to be one of the standard pieces of advice to give to people to be active.

Japan

Where does 10,000 steps a day come from?

Dr. Lee discovered that the origins of the number go back to 1965, when a Japanese company made a device named Manpo-kei, which translates to “10,000 steps meter.” “The name was a marketing tool,” she says

That said, most American Medical Professionals say 7,000 is enough.

Unrelated, Japan has low amounts of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and obesity. Additionally they have a longer life span - which is a big problem with their economy....

10k is lightwork. I average 16 and frequently top 20.

My gym is about 15-20 minutes away at a relaxed pace so I walk there and back home after workouts. That gets me over 6k. By the time I get to work I'm at 9k.

The only time I don't reach 10k is the weekend or days I'm off work. If it wasn't so damn cold I'd do more walking.

My goal is to get in 15k steps per day! 7 days a week! Right now I’m 6 straight days of 7,000 plus. Each week I’ll add 500 more steps to my daily goal! I’m also lifting 5 days per week and feel amazing!
