I wonder where this 10k steps a day thing came from. This seems to be one of the standard pieces of advice to give to people to be active.

Japan

Where does 10,000 steps a day come from?

Dr. Lee discovered that the origins of the number go back to 1965, when a Japanese company made a device named Manpo-kei, which translates to “10,000 steps meter.” “The name was a marketing tool,” she says

That said, most American Medical Professionals say 7,000 is enough.

Unrelated, Japan has low amounts of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and obesity. Additionally they have a longer life span - which is a big problem with their economy....

10k is lightwork. I average 16 and frequently top 20.

My gym is about 15-20 minutes away at a relaxed pace so I walk there and back home after workouts. That gets me over 6k. By the time I get to work I'm at 9k.

The only time I don't reach 10k is the weekend or days I'm off work. If it wasn't so damn cold I'd do more walking.

My goal is to get in 15k steps per day! 7 days a week! Right now I’m 6 straight days of 7,000 plus. Each week I’ll add 500 more steps to my daily goal! I’m also lifting 5 days per week and feel amazing!

I wasn't saying everywhere in the South isn't walkable.
Just the same there is walkable for a city but even in places where you may need to drive for major tasks you likely have space to walk otherwise.

There's a difference between having space to walk and living somewhere walkable.

I was visiting family in Florida and they were in a subdivision surrounded by other subdivisions. All of them were gated. There's a park but it's in another subdivision you can't access if you don't live there. The public park is miles away. There was a movie theater and some restaurants a block away but there's no sidewalks. I just wanted something to eat so I walked there and got some tacos. On the way back the police drove up on me and asked me what I was doing. I said walking and they looked at me like I was crazy. Told them I was visiting from NY and they said I was the only person they've seen not driving to get to the stores so they were suspicious.

The supermarket was a 5 minute walk but you have to cross an 8 lane road with no crosswalk or traffic lights. The place is not designed for people to walk. They force you to drive even to get to things right next to you.

I can easily get steps in because basic things are all in waking distance. I get the munchies and I go few blocks to the bodega or the supermarket around the corner. I can go a bunch of places right in my neighborhood. Meanwhile when I have relatives visit from driving only states and they're damn near ready to pass out from walking a few blocks :mjlol:

Sure but they could walk those subdivisions and get the same steps in a much shorter time. 2.5 hours for 5K steps is a light stroll.

Them being flabby walking is just who they are.
