So i went to summer league yesterday and was there all day. Saw at least a half of Almost all the games. Here is my report:
My top 5 prospects (only guys who played yesterday).
Adrian Payne - after the first game, i hit up the urinal. Payne walked in to the relatively empty bathroom and for some reason decided to use the urinal next to mine. I didn't peak, no homo but on court he was moving really well and i was impressed with his passing ability and confidence on his jumper.
Alan Williams - was probably the strongest player I saw and got rebound after rebound and in general caused major havoc around the bucket. Made Kazemi look like a child.
Scotty Hopson - didn't have a great day and didn't need to as his team dominated the Nets. The talent is readily apparent, however He needs to be on an NBA team. Of course his character issues are well documented but I think he has matured. Seemed focused during the game, in huddles and on the bench.
Josh Richardson - was probably (along with Jakarr Sampson) the best perimeter defender that I watched extensively. Although he is a bit undersized at SG and didnt look all that comfortable playing PG. Also his jumper looked consistent enough and improved.
Jerian Grant - did an excellent job running high pick n rolls (pretty much the only play any team runs there) He is an NBA level PG without doubt.
Other notes:
Kelly Oubre scored 30 points and his shot was really falling but he still looks tentative as a playmaker and i question his ball handling and first step. Also he may be a bit soft and weary of contact. Needs the weight room.
Trey Lyles - really shot the 3 well and has a really smooth looking stroke but I question his decision making and defense.
D'Angelo Russell -I didn't catch the whole laker game. It was by far the most crowded game of the day. I couldn't get good seats and i was hungry so I left to get lunch. I did see him shoot at least 2-3 airballs though but looking at the numbers, i guess he finally played better.
Karl Towns - looked good in the post. He really has excellent touch on his hook shots, with either hand. Also the potential is there defensively. However he looked unconfident with his jumper and he is a long way from being a perimeter threat, though that potential remain as well. Give him 2 years.
Willie Cauley-Stein - looked horrible on offense but the defense and athletic ability make him worth it. I might have been wrong about him being overrated.
Porzingis, Okafor and Mudiay didn't play unfortunately.
One guy who I've been impressed just watching on TV but who didn't play yesterday is Edy Tavares for the Hawks. Legit 7"2, great shot blocker and moves pretty well. He is another nice backup center to go along with Muscala.
I also ran into Tyler Haws and John Shurna. They were talking about going to try out for Euro teams after the Cavs drop them. Shurna was really funny and cool dude. I also met the cast of the Starters while they were preparing to do their program live. All were nice and friendly and down to talk to "fans" I talked to Tas extensively. They gave out shirts to everyone
Also I met an old scout ( wouldn't tell me what team he worked for but he sat at the scout designated area and arena workers brought him printed out box scores for the games.)
We talked about the business and the relations between metrics and the eye test. He gave me his contact.
