If you are only telling your kid to be subservient so they can come home alive, you're failing as a father and complicit in the perpetuation of the system of white supremacy. You're giving only one half of The Talk (the way things are) but not giving the other half (why things are this way and how to change it). That was the problem with Bernie's answer. It's disempowering and normalizes this fukked up intolerable state of affairs. It doesn't educate your child or spur them to engage in the type of civic activity needed to change the system. I don't think it was a horrible answer or disqualifying or anything, just incomplete. But I only saw what was being sent around in that clip, so maybe he gave a more complete answer later on.

I have no problem with people learning their rights, but the main problem with policing is not that people don’t know their rights, it is that police are violating their rights with no consequences. You are speaking to someone who was targeted countless times by the police in a redneck area when I was in the military. In many cases you don’t even have a chance to tell police you know your rights before something happens.
