All Eyez On Me starts off great, but midway through the album, things start to sound a bit “samey” in the sense that, melodically, it becomes one big song, I feel like although the album was a departure from the signature G-Funk sound, it lacked the variety that made The Chronic, Doggystyle, Dogg Food, and not to mention the Death Row Soundtracks (Above The Rim, Murder Was The Case, etc) great. As far as the lyrics go, while Pac ain't no slouch, the overall performances from the features are subpar, and the subject matter that galvanized listeners and made Pac stand out was neutralized in favor of a cookie-cutter West Coast gangsta rap affair.
Infamously, after listening to AEOM, critics called Pac a cardboard cutout of a guy impersonating a thug. I repeat for clarity, they weren't saying he was impersonating a thug, but rather that he's the guy who is impersonating the guy who's impersonating the actual thug. In other words, lyrically, Pac wasn't in his true authentic form throughout this album.
