A Generation of American Men Give Up on College: ‘I Just Feel Lost’

I feel for these young men, especially and mostly the black man.

I wholeheartedly recommend college to folks, but I don't advocate entering college without knowing exactly what you want from it. I attribute folks going to college because "its the right thing to do" rather than I want to be XYZ and that requires a degree. College is truly what you make it. If you come in lost, you will exit degreed and lost.

College is a hard transition. You went from a structured day to an unstructured one. Your parents' guidance to total freedom. Not only that, you are surrounded by people, but still struggling to find your community. It's extremely difficult, and I can't imagine what the feels like as a black man. Video games and etc are a response instead of an initial choice. But, I wish he would reconsider. If he enjoys stocks and investments, he would enjoy being integral in the investment process rather than doing low-level trades. Only college can do that.

Getting a degree is still better than no-degree but it's still hard to get a job or at least a good paying job after. What is the point after you factor in tuition/student loans/and other expenses just to end up with a shytty job after

A degree increases your ceiling so you can keep getting promoted. The good jobs require experience too. If you don't take out hella debt then a degree is usually worth it. I say usually because it also depends on your field of study

As someone who went to college and graduated with a non-stem degree, there's absolutely nothing wrong with not going to college if you're going to trade school.

U can’t get into college if you don’t have the grades and won’t want to go if you hate school. The public school system the way it’s set up is fukking ass high school is torture to young boys.

When I was working with second chance juveniles they didn’t want to hear about an extra 4, 5 years of school and added rigor. I had to sell these nikkas on frats, parties, bytches, campus amenities, more relaxed schedule, concentrated study, getting away from the hood, and long term earning potential.

If we are using SAT scores as the main metric, the gaps, in general, are not that big, and I'm not aware of Black girls significantly outperforming Black boys.

You get way more out of your $65k a year Columbia Law course than you do going somewhere like Cooley Law School. Access to some of the best professors, alumni, etc. People have proven to pay the cost so if I was the institution, why would I reduce anything? And its a JD so you should expect to pay that much. Majority of college debt is held by postgrads and not 4-year diploma recipients

If you're in grad school, you are paying to be educated in a subject that requires an high amount of expertise, a chance at forwarding your career professionally, and possibly access to a network you wouldn't have access to otherwise. You should expect to pay a lot of money. This isn't rocket science and its not what the point of this thread is.

I keep telling Black men, if you can, become an electrician, the demand for them is crazy right now. I just brought a new light for my mancave and I had to wait 2 weeks and pay an electrician 150 dollars to put it in.

So according to the article, colleges are almost 60% female. They're presumed to join the work force in some capacity after they graduate. Let's see what percentage of females remain in the work force after having children. Some women stay home with their children and won't return to work until they're in school and some won't return at all.

Anyway, college isn't for everyone. I know of trade workers making 300k a year consistently and they don't own the companies they work for. Outside of a college graduate owning their own company or getting hooked up by family/friend, I can't think of any job in the U.S. that will pay a new college grad 300k a year and all they have is a degree.

It's wild, my cousin went to trade school from NJ to Tenessee, she had a record but she went to trade school down there and in 15 years since she went down there, she owns her own business with 10 employees.
