I'd argue the most we'll ever see was 2010-11 where the west had Los Angeles, Dallas, San Antonio, and Oklahoma City and the east had Miami, Boston, and Chicago. That's seven teams that were realistic contenders and people still weren't happy. It's a byproduct of a long season.
