Ethiopia is also not a unified country, it's over 82 tribes forced to be part of what is now known as Ethiopia. A lot of fighting goes on there. Plus, majority of African rulers applied the same rule to protect their own. Key thing is their own didn't mean black, just as Christian (which doesn't mean all Christian in reality) doesn't mean white.
