Why would someone making 150k choose a poor neighborhood like Corona? They make enough money to live in the immediate vicinity if their job. Moving to a slummy neighborhood would likely be a downgrade from wherever they're living already (whether it be in New York or elsewhere)

BECAUSE RICH a$$hole TRANSPLANTS DON'T AUTOMATICALLY MOVE TO THE RICH PLACES... :what: Haven't you seen what happened to fukking Brooklyn??? don't you get it? they gentrify POOR areas and their presence brings in developers and skyrocketing property values... they not gonna move to LIC they gonna move to where its cheaper...:stopitslime:

Walmart would actually be very popular in NYC. Out of touch white liberals want to dictate what kind of businesses are acceptable, though

You think Walmart is going to pay $15/hr, 40 hr sick leave, Paid Family leave, time + half, maternity leave and not stop their employees from unionizing

Eventually the area will be too expensive even for Amazon employees so they'll branch out.

The white gentrifiers in Brooklyn (meaning those moving to gentrifyING neighborhoods rather than full blown gentrified neighborhoods like Park Slope) are mostly not making Amazon salaries. The ones I know in Bushwick are in the 30-60k range and live with roommates. People making 150k can comfortably afford to live in LIC (or Greenpoint, Williamsburg, etc.). All of Western Queens is already too expensive for any poor people to buy property in anyway, that ship has sailed years ago.

fukk no, but before that was a thing, there has always been resistance to Walmart coming to NYC. Which is silly, because there are already several Target stores which are pretty similar.

Has anyone been to silicon valley? Even the shyttiest of the shyttiest house and area have high rents where tech workers have room mates. Obviously if you don't earn tech workers pay you're completely fukked . I don't want Queens to turn into that. It's already expensive here and I don't need it getting anymore. It'll benefit only the rich.

That's a possibility but I can only see that happening if they add even more employees than originally anticipated. Still, they'll go to Sunnyside, Woodside, Astoria, Greenpoint, etc. first, which are already very expensive places to buy houses in. The reason a neighborhood like Corona will get more expensive is because of the Asian interest (as it is sandwiched between two Chinatowns).

I get what you're saying but what will go up in place of Amazon? More luxury condos with no jobs to match? Another Amazon-like tech workplace?

Even Amazon 150k pay isn't enough to buy a house or property in LIC or Astoria so I think it'll have a bigger impact on the rest of Queens especially the cheaper parts. This is why I'm against it, also the fact that they need tax breaks.

How about affordable housing ? Maybe a community center? I think the area can benefit from having a municipal parking lot.

The problem with affordable housing is that it's often a scam, it will be 20% "affordable" units that end up not even being cheaper than market rate. As for parking lot, I think the city is trying to move away from being autocentric. I can't see them using all that space for a parking lot in LIC.

I think that's enough for a co-op/condo in most of Queens, but less so for houses West of the Van Wyck. The only places with "cheap" houses left are dominated by single family houses to begin with, as opposed to buildings where landlords can try to push out the lower income tenants in favor of wealthier ones.

There are a lot of wealthy native New Yorkers tech/finance bros to begin with, I don't see why they would need to import people (although they probably still will).

I guess you're agreeing with me then?

meanwhile DMV is salivating
VA already had an additional incentives built in to their deal to give more office space to Amazon

and PG County thinks they are back in the running asking for meetings with Amazon

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if they just plop the rest of the HQ somewhere in the DC area. They already had a bunch of options here.
