Oh is that what it needs? Is that what the long time residents of this city need?

More "development"? and "luxury condos"?

fukk you're so out of touch it's scary
Bruh, I wish we could go back to an era of Hershey chocolate corporations building middle class homes for their employees, but we don't have that scenario.

People want jobs and opportunity locally. Theres a reason cities were bending over for these jobs. The same reason a lot of countries are trying to move away from natural resource economies a la "the green new deal"...its diversification.

Everyone wants more tech jobs that reflect the vibrancy and wealth of options economically.

i can't tell who really lost tho...NYC should have renegotiated the deal. Their tax incentives were ridiculous but NYC clearly would have benefited in the long run because it needs more diversity in its economy.
Negotiate? My understanding is this was the bid they made on their own in order to best out other suitors. :jbhmm:

yeah...cause that area needs development and NYC needs diversification in their economy. More people are leaving the North East.

Yup. The nimbys won. Yes, but I have to wonder if a lot of that has to do with baby boomers and retirees moving to low cost states.

Anyways the only outcome of this now will be more useless million dollar condos and 4k a month 1 bedroom apartments.

I'm disgusted.

I think Amazon played themselves by doing this back door dealing and then refused to budge on any details like the tax incentives or that stupid effing helipad.

Plus their lack of commitment to the local infrastructure was insulting...however NYC needed amazon and I think everyone lowkey knew it. They just wanted better terms.

I think you're missing the point. Which is the people who would be displaced or gentrified aren't the types of people who benefit from these jobs that are coming in, yet their tax dollars will be used to pushed them out of their own homes.

Thats kinda unfortunate because this ain't the 90s. You ain't gonna hustle off some random jobs like you used to. You need high skilled jobs in this day and age and NYC doesn't have those hardcore manufacturing or industrial zones they used to.

Theres a REASON Long Island City was the location for HQ2. That area was dead BECAUSE of a lack of economic growth.

Amazon HQ2 was a coup for NYers or want to be NYers looking for better paying tech jobs while living in the city.

But the city overplayed it's hand.

i live in a city with gentrification but the thing NYC has over where I am is that NYC has way better zoning control. Yall can build more affordable housing than we can.

nope, tech companies like amazon attract talent from all over the country. people pick up to move for amazon, google, facebook, apple, etc. jobs. these jobs amazon was touting wasn't going to do anything but bring more highly educated, already high earning (or those with high earning potential - i.e. harvard/stanford/MIT grads) professionals to LIC/Queens. at best it might attract some of those types from other companies who already live in NY, but the types of jobs these were and the pool of talent who would fill them did not warrant the incentives they were being given.

Exactly, the big reason why they would move a NYC is to be competitive in attracting elite level talent from a national/global perspective. They're not hiring state school grads for these 150k positions.

Seen it in the heights for the last decade too. It's amazing having people cap for this nonsense like we don't see how this goes.
