TYRONE GA!
If that shyt is systems and depending on the location it is possible. That is why I keep stressing in here that systems and software is where the money at. You get to principle level you make as much or more than a manager.

Edit - Plus in DoD you get OT. Don't fukk around and have a top secret (work in systems or Software) and do contract work. Easily making 200k to 250k without even trying.

Forgot about that shyt. When my boy worked at Harris and told me that shyt I was furious!!!

Electrical engineering is the most diverse field (other than maybe mechanical). Its probably the better option just based where the economy is going

this right here... ^^

Sorry to find this thread so late..

Your schooling breh, you just made me google the term "search fund" :pachaha:

And you're right, ageism a motherfukker in engineering. I still think it's possible to survive with govt and govt contractors but there will be a lot of hiring managers that will call at your current salary when you tell them you make over 150k

I see the writing on the wall and I'm actually about to transition over from designing embedded systems to a CTO role for a small company if the money is right. I may crash and burn in 2017 but it's a chance worth taking.

I think an mba would definitely help me navigate the business side but unfortunately I don't have 2 years to spare at the moment

Breh, the ageism is only going to increase now that emerging markets are churning out young, cheap technical talent.

Corporations aren't going to want to pay a 45 year old engineer $150K to do work that can either be automated or done remotely for a fraction of the cost. Or by simply hiring a younger, hungry engineer who will be making entry-level salary and will likely tackle the learning curve fast.

This is what i hate about a lot of young black kids these days. Why the fukk do you clowns fear math?:what:
Just walk into that class and look around at the clowns in there. and say to yourself "All these f@ggots cant be better than me. If they can do it so can I"

That's what got me through Calculus I, Calculus II and Differential equations and Physics when i was in school for engineering. :manny:

same with me when i was in school. dudes walk in them class rooms see a bunch of asian kids and get intimidated but them dudes just put their heads down and study like everyone else nothing special

Yea man, that would be great. Really just trying to see where I should be guiding my career and if staying DoD is the best move for me.

Thanks!

It only carries real weight when you work for the government (which i do; NYC) but get your PE license..

The thing I fear about working for the government long term is that sometimes I feel the skills aren't transferable to private industry(unless you do NG or Lockheed).

and if you stick with gov't, its like you miss out on making better money in exchange for a lax job with better security.

that's not true .. at 45 .. (I'm 43) with the diverse work that I've done I would have no problem getting hired for that.. after all they need an engineer to run the operations and maintain the automation equipment since the programs and systems are well beyond the new hire or "factory" worker skill and education level.

Not necessarily. Any organization that is subject next to federal regulations must have a PE on board to be a signature, take the blame, should anything go wrong.

Edit.

But you're absolutely right it holds more weight in the goverent sector. Many engineers don't want to deal with that responsibility.

Do you have malpractice insurance in much the same way as doctors?

that's pretty much what it comes to.. but also which agency and department you work for plays a lot into it... the agency I work for has a lot of work and my department is in charge of ALL of the work whether it's done by consultants or in house

but just because you have your "cushiony" government job doesn't mean you cant have your own business... I do...
I provide engineering services, architectural/drafting/etc/.. design homes do blueprints, etc... on the side...

Another thing about working for DOD. You can get in easiest thru the DoD contractors (LM, Raytheon, Northrop) but once you are in and develop some skills, you really can get a bump in salary by moving to the government organizations that are the middle men between the contractors and the Armed Services (Army, Navy, etc). I'm currently looking for a place to live in the DC/North VA area and Its crazy there because of all this DOD/Government work that are paying average +$100K salaries...
