Not necessarily. Any organization that is subject next to federal regulations must have a PE on board to be a signature, take the blame, should anything go wrong.

Edit.

But you're absolutely right it holds more weight in the goverent sector. Many engineers don't want to deal with that responsibility.

Do you have malpractice insurance in much the same way as doctors?

the work I seal for my agency I'm covered under NYC and the agency's insurance..
fir my private work I have professional liability insurance... costs me 3k/ year

that's pretty much what it comes to.. but also which agency and department you work for plays a lot into it... the agency I work for has a lot of work and my department is in charge of ALL of the work whether it's done by consultants or in house

but just because you have your "cushiony" government job doesn't mean you cant have your own business... I do...
I provide engineering services, architectural/drafting/etc/.. design homes do blueprints, etc... on the side...

Ahh I see. Hence the PE. But what if you aren't a "real" electrical engineer but more of a systems engineer with an ee degree.

Would a PE be worth my time?

The "real" is only a matter of words for the government..
the way NYC works ... 2 people .. exact same everything ..... the one without the PE/RA is an assistant engineer/architect the one with is full title (as we say)

The PE is general as fukk when it goes to disciplines. it doesn't have various breakdowns you get in the workplace ...
you take the FE which covers ALL disciples
then the PE is discipline specific but its only like 10 topics .. (electrical, mechanical, structural, civil, chemical, and a few more)
mechanical includes HVAC, mechanical, plumbing, etc.
electrical is power, industrial, computer, etc...

And your license isn't discipline specific.. its just called Professional Engineer..

Breh , Job postings are constantly popping up, so I read up.

Have you visited or spoke with a law firm ? Do you need a co sign etc ? Also , what method are you using to study ?

My sister is studying for the real bar exam , I might just have to show her out. :lolbron:

I worked as a patent examiner for a year when I first graduated college. So I'm already familiar with the process. I've been using mypatentbar.com to re-familiarize myself with the material. The real good courses are 2k, people are selling their book for the courses for $600-800 ...I'm trying to decide which one I'm gonna do. I'm using the free guide on mypatentbar until then.

You don't need a cosign...just a science degree.

To be honest, in my experience (+15 years DOD), having a PE really doesn't get you anywhere if you don't have the experience working in the field. I've never been told by my bosses that you really need to get that PE over getting the Masters in Systems Engineering. The Masters is what opens doors in my experience or just taking to classes to get there. There's other certifications like IEEE, Green Belt, AGILE that might be more beneficial in Systems Engineering...

The thing I fear about working for the government long term is that sometimes I feel the skills aren't transferable to private industry(unless you do NG or Lockheed).

and if you stick with gov't, its like you miss out on making better money in exchange for a lax job with better security.

Thats the only thing I hate about government jobs, that starting salary is always getting nerfed. My friend had an offer from a government agency (dont know which one) and they wanted to start him at 42k :what:. He rejected that shyt instantly.

It seems gov jobs are only good once you been in the game a while and want that job security for raising a family and such.

Hmm, I thought that was the FE that was general.

It may be different in NY, but in Michigan I believe (going off the top again ) that to get your PE you have to choose a specific discipline.

OK, do you think I should try and be a patent examiner before I commit to taking the test ?

Is that what sold you to this path ? If not, what did

you misread my statement.. I might need to edit it

the FE is GENERAL

I was saying the PE doesn't break down within disciplines I called it general in the sense of electrical is electrical. its not systems, transmissions, programming, wiring, etc... that's what I meant..

within electrical the first 4 hours of the test was genereal EE and the 2nd 4 hours was a little more specific (Power, Computers, Industrial, General)

I was trying to say the all these subdivisions within the engineering disciplines that these jobs/industries created it doesn't break down that way for your exam

same with me when i was in school. dudes walk in them class rooms see a bunch of asian kids and get intimidated but them dudes just put their heads down and study like everyone else nothing special
I remember when i first moved here to the U.S. i was in (i think) trigonometry and in the back of the class it was me, this cuban girl, another haitian dude named Darnell and this chinese dude named Kai.

Me and the cuban chick were the ones getting As and Kai would copy every single thing we did otherwise he was a D student in math. Yet other black kids would sit in the back of the class during tests and try to copy off Kai because he's asian and soon realized dude was copying from us and asking us for answers. I would help him out but the cuban chick couldnt stand him so she'd be on my ass not to give him anything. Eventually our teacher made Kai move to the front and left me and the chick alone in the back. We both got A's. Kai never got even a C in the last 3 exams. All Ds and Fs.

Same thing again when i took trig/precal in college. The brightest students in the class was my haitian homeboy named Wislair and this white dude. Class started out with 26 students at the beginning of the semester. ALl but 9 of us dropped out and one failed. Only people to pass was Wislair, myself, this nigerian chick we used to study with named Matilda and two white boys. The asian kid failed. The other two asian kids had dropped out long ago.

Yes working at the PTO will best prepare you. The first 8 months is basically a classroom setting teaching patent law and procedures.

I left after a year because I wanted real life engineering experience. Examining Japanese translated patent applications on obscure computer memory technologies had me :damn:as a green college graduate.

If you apply to work at the PTO, make sure you are comfortable in the technology you say you have experience in.

A lot of koreans and indians cheat their ass off too. They would cheat off me as well. Good grades by any nabs neccessary is so ingrained in their culture

And keep this in mind: My boy Wislair was running laps around these cats but barely spoke english. I remember he and i used to study math together and he needed help understanding the word problems. But dude was a math genius. Put it this way: He fukked many chicks just because they were trying tostudy with him for chemistry and physics

Hell, he was taking an english class that had him writing all these essays. Dude was struggling big time so i told him to write up anything he can. Just put something together saying what he meant to say and email it to me and i'd go over it and send him the corrections before he submits it. I managed to get him a B in his English class :pachaha:

I miss that mofo, tho. He and i both fukked this jamaican chick who was studying to be a pharmacy tech who was struggling in Chemistry :pachaha: While i'm trying to be a gentleman, dude's approach to women was straigh up savage at times. One time he trying to finger this chick in the library and homegirl was like "im on my period" and his answer was "you lying. Let me see" :birdman:
Had me like :picard: :laff:
