Been traveling for 3+ years after I got my CRCST. There's money to be made but some of these facilities are a headache. There's usually plenty of overtime as well if you're really trying to bank.

What was your pathway to assistant director?
Tech > lead/charge > educator > supervisor > dept. manager > assistant director?

I’m telling y’all look into this field

I have no degrees just a GED (not bragging). But you can pull in over 100k with just a year experience… trust

You can self teach yourself or go to school

This field is always hiring man
What are the pros and cons of the field?

What website did you go to for self teaching?

Funny thing is -- in Ohio (northern Ohio especially), Steris is HUGE. There's all sorts of stuff in Northern Ohio for them, ranging from surgical equipment repair (mobile and stuff that's sent in from all over the country), there's travel repair, and also the aforementioned sterile processing tech. There's a ton of OT available, and they've been recruiting people in my field like crazy.

What are the pros and cons of the field?

What website did you go to for self teaching?
Pros: easy to enter without medical knowledge
Not mentally taxing work, lot of repetition
Opportunity for overtime nearly always
Turnover is high so typically upward movement is there as well as long as you learn your instruments/priority items
Uniform/scrubs are provided so no need for "work clothes"
Transition to other depts/speciality like nursing/surg tech/respiratory therapy/lab tech
More than likely the dept. will have high woman to man ratio, so for those who are looking for that type of environment/cavorting with coworkers

Cons: Mistakes have to be avoided especially in urgent cases
Facilities outdated equipment
Physically takes a toll; plenty of lifting so hands, back, legs
Shorthanded in terms of staffing so expect plenty of work and not much backup
The pettiness/gossip that happens throughout the dept.
Blamed by OR or reps for things out of your control
Tech…. Charge…. Lead/educator……Supervisor….. and now AD
That's dope. Props. As AD, how often are you dealing with the OR/OR management?

There is a technical college near where I live that offers a two year degree in surgical tech. I dont have the money to go to school and do that. As long as I get the book from that site and pass the test to be certified I don't even need to get a two year degree in surgical tech, correct?

Surg tech and sterile processing is two different things

I’m in the sterile processing field. You can cop the book and study yourself. You have to get 400 hours of hands on experience at a hospital to be fully certified and pass the exam

Yes, that's the biggest factor for me whether or not to go in that direction, dealing with the OR and the frustration that comes with it. I applaud you though because from what I've experienced there aren't too many brothers who are in these upper management roles in these facilities.
