That's good to hear and those kids need it the most. From experience kids really start veering off the summer between 6th and 7th grade. Those are very important years.
Yup. Everyday she's there, since shes been there the school has improved and i wear polos & fleeces to work just because I'm truly proud of her. Those kids love her too, I've seen letters they write to her and you can tell where it really matters.

Im a science teacher in the BX ( mott haven to be exact). I actually work with adults who are transitioning back into school. I love the kids but management is annoying. It a uphill battle everyday but rewarding and fulfilling work nonetheless

I'm not a real teacher yet. I just work as a sub. But I haven't faced any challenges to be honest. I love the kids and I love educating the youth. I guess one thing I had to switch up is how relatable I am to them. I mean I'm young and you know how little kids look at young teachers calling me "Mr. Cool" and "Best teacher ever" :to:
Sometimes I can be a little too friendly with em. So nowadays I make sure I stay stern. But the most important aspect for me is I don't act like a sub. When I walk in the classroom I make sure they know I am the legit teacher and not a sub. It runs very smoothly for me. I do middle school btw.

I tried kindergarten one time and it was . Crying and poop. Constant nagging and snotty noses. Threw that to the bushes quick. High school kids are just boring. So middle school is the most fun and rewarding

Tears would flow if I heard that comment

My mother and sister are teachers

Speak on your experience bro. Likes and dislikes. What made you go the special education route? How hard was it to get your foot in the door? I'm looking to become a teacher in NYC too wrapping up my junior year soon.
My fault, breh. Forgot all about this thread. So, the job according to Scott... I love it. i love teaching, i love working with the kids, i love making a difference, i love being the advocate and voice that a lot of kids don't have.

I dislike many of the adults, i dislike the system that sets them up to fail. i dislike the laziness that i see in some of my colleagues and that is obvious when certain students make their way to the 7th grade with certain deficits. I dislike often being blamed by the media and no nothings. I dislike that i take my work home most days. Sometimes I care too much. I learned that that is a thing.

I don't know, man. It's a lot to type out and I'm watching the Cowboys-Packers game to be honest. Do you have any particular questions?

I work at an alternative to incarceration program with juvenile youth when I'm not in school as an educational specialist so I know all about that system breh. There's kids that are so misunderstood and never been pushed. I've worked with kids who are in high school who struggle to subtract without a calculator. A kid in the 10th grade reading at a 3rd grade level shyt is sad. Just kids that are misguided and have no knowledge of self. To quote AZ "spiritual pain can bring forth physical reign, without knowledge of self how else can a criminal change?".

A lot of teachers tell me about taking the work home thing. Teachers tell me their first year is so exhausting by 9 PM it's sleep time.

:damn:

How difficult was it to find employment? Some teachers sub for a long time before getting their first job.
Do you feel like you are underpaid or are you satisfied?
What's your relationship like with administration?

Watching the game too, seeing the Cowboys take this L

Yeah, I gotta say, from early, establish a work-life balance. As hard as it is. I didn't do that so I'm kinda suffering now to get back on track. I was in school and working at the same time (this is my first year not being in grad school). I'm :flabbynsick: now and working to get back in shape. (You will drink a lot and you will eat shyt).

I didn't find it difficult to find employment, because this is one of the few fields where being a brother is a huge advantage. I never had to sub or anything, thank God.

Honestly, I think it depends on your school and how much responsibility you take on. I know that I'm fairly satisfied with my salary, but then I'm a simple dude. I don't have a lot of expenses. Also, you get yearly raises and the more advanced your degree/more credits you have, the more you make.
I'm better with admin at the school I am currently. Last school, admin hated me (went as far as having a cellphone thrown at me). It was wild. Principals are the ultimate power trippers. Tread lightly. Don't be a kiss ass, but don't go around being reckless (which, admittedly, i was)

That's crazy if you feel comfortable disclosing I'd like to hear that story.

Last principal was a maniac. Straight up bully who pulled a number of stunts (including lying that the superintendent was coming, having her boy come through and pose as the supe, just to see who would call out and not "have her back"). This one time the super was coming the day after an open school night and she was stressed because the school was looking shytty. i had already planned to take the day off because i was graduating. she was mad about it, called me into her office to try to get me to not go. Said that i wasn't do that, i had my auntie from Panama coming in, She got upset, practically threw her cellphone at me and screamed at me. Luckily, my observations were done for the year so... :yeshrug:

Been in this for going on a decade now.

I feel the same. I've had a rocky road but now I'm pretty satisfied. I've worked for some TERRIBLE people, but my current principal is pretty hands off which is GREAT for teachers like me who don't need administration down their back but horrible for the crappy teachers who really have no business in the classroom. I've grown to be real cool with the co-workers in my department which helps A LOT.

Again, there are teachers who have NO BUSINESS in the classroom and for a Special Ed teacher, it makes our jobs tougher. Luckily, I have a background in the subject I'm in, so I can take over the class if need be (which is often) without missing a beat. In fact, I'm just a few credits shy of being certified in that subject.

I'm usually :scusthov: towards middle school, but I ADORE my 6th graders this year. High school is still cool. My freshmen are straight. What people still don't get is classroom management is really half the battle. If you can't get the kids to behave, you're in for a tough ride. It doesn't matter what you have planned. If they don't behave, you're done.

Plan, plan, plan. Be organized in your lessons, tough yet caring, and consistent.
