Fox News got out of a lawsuit by claiming that their news was entertainment and their viewers don’t take their position seriously.

If you have the money to sue, then sue their asses like the Dominion voting machine company did a few weeks back. Fox News and newsmaxx spend a few days walking back all of that rigged machine talk

How about a station just gets fines when they purposely report false information. Freedom of speech is good but bad actions need consequences
That's fair(although there should be an arduous process on what is deemed "purposely false"), i'm not saying nothing should be done about it but "Reining" news media in and censoring what they can and cannot say is absolutely wrong and will further radicalize people.

Don't rush to give away your rights.

People don't watch TV anymore, bringing back the Fairness Doctrine wouldn't do anything but further radicalize the right in their "fake news" crusade. There's no one answer to this hole we've dug ourselves in, it's going to take something a lot more comprehensive than that and a cultural shift on how information is processed and shared person to person.
Congress writing a new Fairness Doctrine that would include social media and online news sites that states (just like the original FD) that they have to "present controversial issues of public importance and do so in a manner that is honest, equitable, and balanced" would cover all that.

Also the idea that doing something to curb the rampant and blatant lies from the media would further radicalize the already insanely radical isn't a strong enough argument for me.

That is similar to the Congressional Republicans argument yesterday that impeaching Trump again would incite the same group that already raided the Capitol to behave badly. It's far too late to try to appease that group of domestic terrorists.

AOC says Congress may form commission to ‘rein in’ media after Capitol riot
By Ebony Bowden

January 13, 2021 | 12:57pm

WASHINGTON — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez revealed that Congress is looking into creating an investigative commission to “rein in” the media in the wake of the US Capitol siege.

During a lengthy Instagram Live on Tuesday evening where she revealed that she feared for her life during the siege, the “Squad” member accused the mainstream media of “spewing disinformation” ahead of the deadly riot in which five people died.

“There’s absolutely a commission that’s being discussed but it seems to be more investigating in style rather than truth and reconciliation,” she said.

“I do think that several members of Congress in some of my discussions have brought up media literacy because that is part of what happened here,” Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) went on.

“We’re going to have to figure out how we rein in our media environment so you can’t just spew disinformation and misinformation,” she said.

“It’s one thing to have differentiating opinions, but it’s another thing entirely to just say things that are false, so that’s something that we’re looking into.”

Social media giants and Silicon Valley have undertaken a mass cleansing of their platforms in the wake of the violence — permanently suspending President Trump and deleting the accounts of many of his supporters

She was actually doing fine. This seems like one of her moments where she was talking too much.

I would say Facebook and Youtube are the avenues most guilty of pushing misinformation and helping to radicalize all them white people.
