Its very simple. Any group that wants to list itself as a news organization is required to list its sources.

News is meant to be a form of education. Imagine going to school and your teacher is telling you that actually there weren't slaves and black people were paid well for their labor. If you ask the teacher says "people said that" and when you ask who they say "don't worry about it" would you trust that teacher?

If the statements and claims being made are not verifiable there should be consequences. Likewise with advertising. You can't come out with an ad saying "this product will cure your cancer" without providing ANY verifiable proof.

Cacs got whipped up into a frenzy talmbout some damn voter fraud with zero reliable sources to prove it.

Agreed.. It seems as if independent research isn't even promoted anymore.. Thats bigger than false news in my opinion..

Nah, this would definitely go to the supreme court. I dont think this is a good idea for the government to tell News stations what's true and false.

Unfortunately, its just a culture problem. America never held white people fully accountable, in the past, and so now those chickens are coming to roost.

Those sources just get deemed as fake tho. You cant combat this just by providing sources because the people you are trying to inform have already written off the sources.

You have the GA SoS (a trump voter) saying out right trump lost the election and MAGA bros just like, "nah youre deep state illiuminati, im not listening to you,". And this is the guy that RUNS the election for the state!

Whether people want to believe the sources are real is beside the point. The point is that fox News and the like should be required to actually explain how they arrived at the conclusions they are repeating to the viewers and distinguishing facts from opinions.

Tucker Carlson should not be able to get on TV and say black people all want to rape and kill white people and then if pressed in court he says "im an entertainer im not a scientist or investigator" the show should clearly start out letting people know "these are my own opinions and thoughts and not facts. What you do is your business". Just like how in advertising your claims should be verifiable and if not, it should be completely clear that you're just entertaining people and not trying to educate them.

AOC says Congress may form commission to ‘rein in’ media after Capitol riot
By Ebony Bowden

January 13, 2021 | 12:57pm

WASHINGTON — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez revealed that Congress is looking into creating an investigative commission to “rein in” the media in the wake of the US Capitol siege.

During a lengthy Instagram Live on Tuesday evening where she revealed that she feared for her life during the siege, the “Squad” member accused the mainstream media of “spewing disinformation” ahead of the deadly riot in which five people died.

“There’s absolutely a commission that’s being discussed but it seems to be more investigating in style rather than truth and reconciliation,” she said.

“I do think that several members of Congress in some of my discussions have brought up media literacy because that is part of what happened here,” Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) went on.

“We’re going to have to figure out how we rein in our media environment so you can’t just spew disinformation and misinformation,” she said.

“It’s one thing to have differentiating opinions, but it’s another thing entirely to just say things that are false, so that’s something that we’re looking into.”

Social media giants and Silicon Valley have undertaken a mass cleansing of their platforms in the wake of the violence — permanently suspending President Trump and deleting the accounts of many of his supporters

She'd have been better off just saying she was to bring back the Fairness Doctrine instead of saying "rein in" because now the Right Wing and anyone who fancies themselves a champion of free speech will take her words and misconstrue them into something sinister.
