Are Horses Athletes?

Long Story Short: I'm at the track this past Saturday hoping to see history as most of the race world had given California Chrome more of a chance than recent horses trying to win the Triple Crown.

At the bar having a conversation with a regular & we get into this drunken convo on horses, athletes & jockeys. He says to me, "Secretariat is a top ten athlete of all time." I'm not as heavy as I once was at the track but I say I go about 50-100 times a year and I had to really think on it with the amount of training, etc.

Secretariat is #35 ahead of Big O, Mickey Mantle, OJ Simpson, Jack Dempsey, Bob Gibson, etc.

Simple question: Should a racing horse be considered an athlete or is even the thought of such just foolish to classify them with humans?

I mean technically speaking they are athletes, if you took some run of the mill horse and raced it against one of these thoroughbreds it would get it's mane blown off and made into a weave.


They train, they workout, they may not know why they're doing these things but I'd say they are athletes.
