Lol you post magazine clippings from a hip hop outlet whose sole purpose is to review and report on albums

:dead:

Acclaim from magazines != acceptance and acclaim from fans. Like I said, revisionist history. shyt took 6 years to go platinum:dead:. No one listened to that shyt much less called it a classic.

Weedplate in 96
"Classic" in 2002 after jay told yall to revisit it

IDAHIH 4X platinum in 2 years. Organic classic

Cry about facts just don't rewrite them.
ClAssics aren’t determined by sales.

Just because you start out hotter or pickup steam in a moment doesn’t mean you can’t get lapped if you’re not consistent...

Consistency and longevity is the key...

DMX was arguably better/hotter than hov beteeem 98-00.

I see some people in here get all revisionist about heir favorite artists moment(s) neglecting to assess their consistency and longevity....

Just my .2 :hubie:

you'r disrespecting DMX by saying he picked up steam in the moment... not entirely sute what this thread is even about

DMX had 5 #1 albums in 5 years all plat/multi... the pure definition of consistency

and his 6th album debuted at #2

again.. not sure what this thread is about

but I dont like it

no revisionism over here X been the GOAT to me since Its Dark And Hell Is Hot... Ive never heard a better album in 20yrs

It went gold and had a big single.
If you were seriously following hip hop in 96 you knew about Jay.
It went gold when pac went 5x platinum in 2 months and dmx's debut went 4x platinum.

No one cared about RD in that climate in comparison. If they did, it would have sold as those. If you were following hip hop, you would know this. "Knowing about jay" has shyt to do with him dropping a classic album.

Its dark and hell is hot>>>> any jay album

Jay-z had the longevity since DMX only had one classic/one really good album. but dmx from that time period will always be better to me. Him and methodman rank close. both are some of my favorite rappers in there primes.

DMX is the second best rapper in history. He sits right behind 2Pac.

Both of their music catalogs will stand the test of time because the content makes the listener literally become emotionally invested in what they’re hearing.

20 years later and their music is still regularly played at bbqs and parties, with people reciting the songs word for word. 20 years from now the same thing will still be happening.

I personally prefer X a tad bit more but I agree they are 1 and 2. they have music for any mood that delivers many messages... you can listen to their music 20yrs later and a line that didn't really mean much before might resonate with you now just because life changes and we go through different moods and phases and their music represents that

So no gold album can be classic? The sole barometer is sales?
