DMX was "hotter" than Jay-Z in 1998-1999
But at no point did any knowledgeable hip hop heads consider DMX to be a better emcee than Jay-Z
jay was riding no limit's wave. not the other way around.
volume one jay-z was doing no limit features.
sure, he was on the "made man" album, but they prolly had that song in the stash before volume 2 as well.
mystikal had a career before & after no limit.
why weren't people buying albums for his features any other time?
and I'm not saying that he soley carried the label on his back. but it was his stamp. we purchased those albums for all those features, and then when those features dropped albums, we wanted to hear their chit. but if it wasn't for master p, we wouldn't have been doing any of that chit. jay-z & DMX never had that effect.
also, props to mystical, because like I said in that other thread, he was the most popular EMCEE in rap before DMX took over.

i think RDs a bit overrated, still a classic but Its not on the same level as the illmatics, HOES, Chronics, infamous, liquid swords, obcls, doggystyles, muddy waters, idhihs,, 36 chambers.
@ the bolded. It went gold and had a big single.
If you were seriously following hip hop in 96 you knew about Jay.
You really could have put the tank on an instrumental album with nothing but sitars pots and pans and it would have gone gold.
- When did being the bigger rapper mean being better?
South Park is an adult cartoon, but the same level of corniness exists on both Mase and P's behalf.
Jay would've been riding the wave had he put No Limit artists on HIS albums. They were reaching out to HIM. When you're piggybacking off of another artists, you're the one that's doing the reaching out. To say he was riding their wave is backward logic.
Well, Mystikal wasn't a part of a crew that consistently featured him on their albums.
No Limit had a sound, which was the stamp. I'd put money on most fans weren't copping No Limit albums in anticipation to hear a Master P verse like they were for Mystikal.
You're comparing two solo artists to a label. Jay Z and DMX didn't have an army of artists droppin' records every week with an in-house production squad, legal team, security, etc
It doesn't make sense to dub Mystikal the "most popular EMCEE in rap before DMX took over" and then say those No Limit albums were hot because of Master P's stamp. Still, a bigger case could be made for Silkk being more popular than Mystikal and Master P early 1998.
smh, DMX ain't even on Jigga My nikka, that's a solo Jay song off the RR first compilation
Yeah. I’m not trying to shyt on that album. I bought it on release date and think it’s a really dope album. But this hip hop shyt is way deeper than we realize.
How many albums on this list would you put it over?

Bro Jay-Z doesn’t have a better album then hoe let alone infamous.
@ the bolded.
I think hoes a classic 5 mic masterpiece. It’s in my top 5. Not only did prodigy spaz out with goat verses the beats are some of the hardest bass thumping classical music sampling grimy backdrops. That’s y :HavHollywood:on another level. I know some dudes say shyts repetitive but I see different. Every tracks a dagger to the throat.

Ls is also 5 mics shyt will always sound fresh to me that’s the difference. Rza and hav some of the best to do it providing full length classics![]()
Thats the best type tho its hard to restore that feeling. As far as im concerned those are 5 mics, and i know im not in a small margin that thinks that. If lad is a classic and if all eyez on me are classics which are 4 mic albums with filler then i feel like those albums are easily better without a doubt.@ the bolded.
people say HOE is repeptitive, BECAUSE IT IS.
albums like "hell on earth" and "liquid swordz" are moreso cult classics for people who are deeply entrenched in that type of rap. that's the difference between those albums and joints like infamous, purple tape & 36 chambers.
this is elitist talk.
bringing up faux 'knowledgable hip-hop heads' that don't particularly exist.
besides, most uppity type rap fans were too busy criticizing jiggas' every move.
@ the bolded.
shoot, you didn't even have to be a serious follower.
jay was foxy brown's right-hand man.
almost everybody in school, even the corny kids knew about jay-z before reasonable doubt even dropped.
exactly.
youre proving my point breh.
its not.
we're saying that DMX was BOTH bigger AND better.
same level of corniness?
really?
you don't mean that.
I didn't say he rode their wave. I'm saying that if anybody was wave-hoppin, it would be jay.
most fans would take a beanie siegal verse over a jay-z verse. you see how that works? whose taking a mystikal ALBUM over a master p album tho?
rocafella wouldn't be able to drop albums every week like no limit did. their run wasn't strong enough. and nobody ever cared about bloodline records(which, by the way, included a former no limit d-list artist).
