e sold more than 2x platinum, and sales only tell half the story. I'm sure you know this.
Yeah. He was certified 3x years later. Still not touching the 5x Jay did.
And I agree that sales doesn't tell the whole story - but its a relevant piece of information in assessing who was bigger. Definitely has nothing to do with who was better.

ehh. I remember volume 1 being platinum before I graduated.

it was kind of a thing, cuz reasonable doubt was way hotter on the streets, but then he got with def jam, and doubled those sales immediately with a disappointing album.
Nope. He wasn't certified Plat on Vol 1 until February 1999. 4 months after Vol 2 dropped. When Vol 2 was already 4x plat. So I don't think we can say his sales immediately doubled.

No sir, you’re wilding :russ:

Those two albums, especially Vol 1. didn’t get their just due until years later. I have no issues with volume one, when it dropped in 97 it had little to no impact. Mase was better than Hov in 98.

Now in 99, it wasn’t even arguable that Hov had surpassed him.
That's not how I saw it. Mase was obviously bigger...but not even close to better. I had RD in 96 though and loved it and Vol. 1. Vol. 2 was pretty disappointing to me.

No one outside of NY gave a damn about those HITS. X had people worldwide singing ruff riders anthem.

You the type of guy that only started calling reasonable doubt a classic because ya daddy hov told you to years later.
No one outside of NY gave a damn about Money Aint A Thing, Can I Get a, and HKL? :gucci:

The momentum was so strong Def Jam had no choice but to release Flesh of My Flesh the same year
I think Lyor promised to pay them 1 million dollars (or something like that) if they turned the album in so they could release it in 98. Which is probably why it was kinda wack.

This.

Yeah, Jay always was very good at selling himself like he was slightly bigger than he was, and props to him for that. IMO Jay really took over the rap game on Blueprint, and I would even accept arguments that on Volume 3 or Dynasty he basically became the "King of New York" because X was starting to fall off a little bit with album quality, and then Blueprint just really cemented him into that spot. Jay had been planting the seeds for a long time though.

When X was hot though? There hasn't been anyone in the past 20 years that comes to mind that was as hot at X was in their first year on the mainstream besides 50 Cent. In fact when 50 was leading up to Get Rich or Die Trying people were saying he was "DMXing the game."
I would say 98 was Jay's year...he just had to share it with X

You gotta give 98 to Jay and X.
