Reasonable Doubt is better than IDAHIH.
Revisionist history sold by jay and bought by his fans.

IDAHIH dropped in 98 and was immediately considered a classic in 98.

Reasonable Doubt dropped in 96 and was considered a classic in 2001 after jay told yall it was a classic. No one gave 2 shyts about that album until told to.

I’m tempted to say “facts”

But this is a universal opinion that most who lived through the saga remember.

In a lot of ways, Reasonable Doubt flew under the radar in 96

It was considered a classic in January 98 when the Source listed it as one of the greatest 100 hip hop albums of all time.

Will Smith sold more than X in that era too, that doesnt mean shyt.

perfect example is 2015, there is no denying Future was the biggest shyt popping that year even though he didnt sell the most records.
Will Smith. Sure.
Nelly. Ok.
Puff. I agree.

You can't put Jay in that category though.

Yeah. He was certified 3x years later. Still not touching the 5x Jay did.
And I agree that sales doesn't tell the whole story - but its a relevant piece of information in assessing who was bigger. Definitely has nothing to do with who was better.
X sold 5x with attwx off the power of party up tho which was the same year as the tour while jay sold 3x wit his album...

X was easily more popular than jayz during the time. Dude sold 4x with slippin as the single. Thats like jay dropping song cry as his single and sold 4x. Blueprint couldnt even do that with all the pop smashes it dropped

There wasnt 100 hip hop classics in jan 98 so the 2 dont mean the same thing

:mjlol: This thread has been made bout 10 times.

And it only shows the greatness of jay, some nikkaz high points of they career has to be compared to hov for it to have relevance.

And I’m a huge X fan. This thread made me revisit “its dark”

But we need to learn to praise him without having to attach his name to somebody else. Cause it turns into a debate instead of appreciation.

after he retired you had the emergence of jeezy ye wayne then drake & kendrick came along. no year was he the hottest.

him never being the hottest is why he still here and somewhat important. its not a bad thing.
Its bullshyt though.

Hov was the hottest rapper in 2001 easily.

X album had slightly higher first week sales but this ignores Blueprint being pushed up 2 weeks due to heavy bootlegging and releasing on September fukking 11th. Still went plat faster than the X album.

Kingdom come outsold T.I.s King overall and was easily the highest rap first week sales that year.

This was arguably peak TI before he went full pop

We were talking about Master P there. Not DMX.
The tour was early to mid 99 (at least in CA), the 99 albums dropped in December. And I readily concede that once December 99 rolls around, X is clearly bigger than Jay.
FOMFBOMB is 3x plat. I don't think Jay ever saw above 3x plat after Vol. 2.
