Agreed. After 98, he was definitely the bigger artist, but was never considered a top tier mc at the time.

I remember Hov, Pun, Jadakiss, Canibus, Nas, Eminem, Andre 3000, Redman, Mos Def, and Prodigy being in top mc conversations then.
I knew people at the time who thought he should have got rhyme of the year for his verse on Done Started Something.

I could see an argument that IDHIH X was outrapping Vol 2 Jay.
DMX was just better at that time from the energy to having a better album then all of jays albums. Jay was more lyrical thats all he had on x. Obviously jay surpassed him but in that time x was :ohlawd:
i think RDs a bit overrated, still a classic but Its not on the same level as the illmatics, HOES, Chronics, infamous, liquid swords, obcls, doggystyles, muddy waters, idhihs,, 36 chambers. Vol 1-3 are all mediocre. Vol 1s actually trash. Its dark and hell is hot is better then those albums. Although DMXS albums after that one are no higher then 3 mics. i usedto think Flesh of my flesh was the shyt but wen i listen to it now its not that great. and then there was x is pretty whatever too.

They may not have been getting anywhere near as much burn as DMX, but they were definitely on the radar, and not some local acts nobody knew about.. Those names were definitely in the best mc's conversation at the time.

if youre not getting burn, then youre really just a dark-horse and not qualified for the discussion.

some of those names specifically were just purist picks, if we're being real.

you up here tryna put al horford in the same ring as Anthony davis.

You're comparing an entire label to a solo artists which speaks volumes of how huge Jay and DMX were in 1998. No Limit even reached out to Jay for features.

Most of the albums that were successful weren't because of his stamp. Many No Limit fans copped albums for a Mystikal feature before they would a Master P feature. That's evidenced by all of the features he had on some of those albums. He was all over Ghetto D and Da Last Don. That's not counting the other No Limit albums that dropped that year. All of those albums had a uniform sound courtesy of Beats By The Pound. No discredit to P, but to say those albums moved units strictly because of Master P's stamp is overrating him.

jay was riding no limit's wave. not the other way around.
volume one jay-z was doing no limit features.
sure, he was on the "made man" album, but they prolly had that song in the stash before volume 2 as well.

mystikal had a career before & after no limit.
why weren't people buying albums for his features any other time?

and I'm not saying that he soley carried the label on his back. but it was his stamp. we purchased those albums for all those features, and then when those features dropped albums, we wanted to hear their chit. but if it wasn't for master p, we wouldn't have been doing any of that chit. jay-z & DMX never had that effect.

also, props to mystical, because like I said in that other thread, he was the most popular EMCEE in rap before DMX took over.

Master P was far and away the biggest star or draw for No Limit.
But you can’t compare a label to a solo artist.

As for when Vol 1 actually sold plat? Who knows. Jays a business man obsessed with perception. He wouldn’t have sat on a certification for long. He would have had access to Soundscan and knew exactly when it hit one million.

And as for Jay in 98, he had something out there the whole year pretty much and it was a steady ascension capped off with the album selling what it did.

Mos, Jada and Eminem weren’t really in conversations quite yet in 98. Maybe Mos after Black star dropped.

I love Vol 1. I agree that RD isn’t on that level of Illmatics, Chronics, Paid in Fulls etc.

You really could have put the tank on an instrumental album with nothing but sitars pots and pans and it would have gone gold.

Rhyme No More (if you meant to not include it)
Streets is Watching
Friend or Foe 98
Who You Wit

And I love pretty much every other song on that album.

+ You Must Love Me, which is my fav from the album. It's great minus the terrible two (Sunshine and I Know What Girls Like)
