It’s a lot to do with the way we consume music. Down south we listen to music the most in cars because everything is spread out and we don’t rely on public transpo. Plus strip club culture is bigger down here so the music reflects that. Also it’s the Bible Belt so church music or gospel is big, which in that is lot of chanting and repeating words over and over, ala down south rap.

Now up north guys were walking, on subways, buses consuming the music so they are more susceptible to lyrics because you can pay more attention to what artists were saying.

:wtf: late 2024 till now has seen the best hip-hop quality wise in years
Agreed. There are artists who make great music still but on a whole the quality of rap is down that is even reflected in not having a top 100 billboard song recently for the first time in 40 years...the bar is low for what passes now and just over all most of these outsiders, mumble, vibe and feels rappers are just not talented.

Another nikka that got whooped by a country nikka… The insults and stereotypes are so far off based it’s comical…. now I could say that yall are the products of cowards who were too scared to stay down here and fight, so I shouldn’t be surprised at some of these comments of yall thinking yall superior when it’s not warranted in the slightest…. but I won’t go there…. :obama:

Blame Jay-Z. He pushed the “I’m not a rapper, I’m a hustler” narrative and made it look cool to not write rhymes. I believe the latter specifically is what killed “intellectualism” in hip-hop because Lil Wayne took the not writing rhymes narrative during his prime and made it popular down South.

Rappers nowadays do not write their lyrics anymore, they just go into the booth and freestyle whatever bullshyt comes out their mouth and sounds good and this directly correlates to mediocre to downright garbage lyrics because 95% of these new rappers don’t have the talent to do this like a Jay-Z does.

Wayne still cared about being good/great at rapping.

"I don't write" was about memorization to eliminate losing lyrics, not saying anything and letting it be.

Even if hip-hop stayed in NY, mainstream NYC rap would be dudes ripping off 50, Jim Jones, Max B, ASAP Mob, Cash Cobain

Lyrical rap hasn't really popped in the mainstream since 96.

Pretty much…. Cats like @Kenny West @010101 and others claiming the diplomats, 50, Pop Smoke, etc were intellectual MCs dropping gems for the black community
