He broke out in 2009. I wouldn't say he took over that year. Wayne was still on top until 2011. 2011 and on is when Drake became the "face" of mainstream hip hop.

finally some truth.

Drake has no classic albums, no classic mixtapes, nothing of the sort. He is many things to many people and nothing to many people all at the same time. Is he the greatest pop rap act ever? Probably. He's definitely king of urban pop.

Urban pop isn't hip hop tho. They are connected because one appropriates/borrows from the other (you should already which does the borrowing), but it's not the same thing.

Yeah Drake's run is past the "flash in the pan" phase. He doesn't have the record sales to match his predecessors (different era) but he has a grip on his generation like Jay had on his in terms of what he means to them. Drake's throwaway tracks are anthems to the 16-25 demographic.

His only problem is he has no classic albums or singles. He has a lot of hits. But he doesn't have anything that 10 years from now people will be hailing as a musical classic.

Well said:ehh: I think you summed his career up perfectly.

Would people be standing behind Barry Bonds as the most important baseball player?

Would people be standing behind Lance Armstrong as the fastest rider?

Would people be standing behind ANYONE who didn't receive accolades based off of their own work ethic, merit and originality?

I mean, at the risk of a negative train from Drake stans - shyt is mad blatant. Some of his grittier hits were almost totally penned by someone else. That automatically delegates you to Milli Vanilli status.

He has a penchant for making songs SOUND hot... but what does it mean when without that ghost pen, you wouldn't have those hits?

I hate Meek Mill for the record. nikka is trash, but he forever threw an asterisk on Drakes career.

Just my opinion

I think you really felt like it was HIS game after NWTS. He's clearly the man now. Wasn't the case in any year before 2013.
