Bart Scott says it's 'disrespectful' to compare Troy Polamalu to Ed Reed

Different positions, but Troy P reminded me so much of Junior Seau its not even funny, and Junior was probably a top 10 inside linebacker, so its not meant as a diss.

Seau used to make all sorts of plays all over the field and show up on the highlight reels every weekend, just like Troy. You know what they both used to do all the time too? Get caught out of position going for those highlight plays. For every 8-10 great plays you'd see on the highlights, there would be 1-2 'oofs' where they bit on something too hard and let a play in front of them or behind them.

There is a reason all time greats like Belly and Brady fawn over Ed Reed. He was too smart for pretty much EVERYTHING. You could rarely if ever fool him on any motion/fakes/bootlegs/trick plays. You could never count on him being overly aggressive like Troy, becasue he played within the scheme of each play....yet his instincts and physical skills were such that he could still 'make plays' within the scheme and somehow never be out of position.

Ed Reed had a rare gift.

Junior wasnt probably a top 10 inside LB.

I think the way you compare great players with different styles of play or functions is how they impact winning and the overall play of the defense...

In this case, both guys impacted winning and the overall performance of the defense to the highest level. So for me it comes down to, Reed could do EVERYTHING Polamalu could do. The reverse isn't true, and that's not a slight against Troy because he's obviously and clearly an All-Timer, but that tips the scales towards Reed for me...



Who did yall fear and/or hate more, the Reed/Ray duo or Troy/James Harrison duo?



Taylor had no ceiling, he so obviously woulda been an All-Timer. That's my Redskin...

I gotta say Troy/Harrison(more hate than fear)....... Ray and Reed were monsters but the hate from them was never felt.....you felt the hate of Troy/Harrison.... Ray did lay out Chad Johnson once I do remember, it was a nasty hit, and it got flagged, but even after it didnt feel dirty....it was over the middle it made sense.....Troy and Harrison (whole team) wanted to put somebody out it seemed.....

Dawkins was just as fierce a tackler, you can blitz him for sacks...he got turnovers- he played with solid defenders but none were HOFers (that is not a knock of the eagles defense but noone can say his stats were padded bc of who he played with)

But making the argument that Reed played much of his carrer prior to this pass happy era doesn't mean much when one is comparing him to a safety who also played much of his career prior to the pass happy era.

Ed played from 2002-2013.
Troy played from 2003-2014.

i get what you are saying, but i also don’t think you are appreciating the fact that passing numbers were up, the league had changed by time they both were in the league, tds weren’t that high, but 500-600 attempts is a lot of passing

i hear it, but still it seemed Dawk was great, but i never got that take over a game great, and I’m not knocking him because he’s a hof and has the stats and all that, and someone said he didn’t play with other elite defenders, but that defense was stacked for a while, it had the original legion of boom

Ed Reed is clearly one of the top 5 players ever in his position but I think oddly enough Troy is an underrated safety in the sense even though he was a box safety by trade he had very soft hands and could cover very well moreso because he did do in positions where he could easily get burned.
