I think this board is being ridiculous.

I don’t think Bill Maher was absolving people in the past for their behavior. But rather suggesting the context is important.

I agree that judging the past through a modern lens is disingenuous at best and preposterous at worst.

He also didn’t just speak on slavery but also feminism and transgender issues as well.

But if this board wants to pretend otherwise have at it.

There is plenty to criticize Bill Maher about but he’s right that context matters when it comes to history.

Very stupid take.

What about the people who were enslaved? Their opinions and dignity don’t matter?

What about abolitionists? They obviously existed in that era. They don’t matter either?

In the past they were people who opposed slavery, including the enslaved.

You’re an idiot.

Once again.
It’s not about absolving the past behavior but putting it into context.

Do you understand what context is?

Edit - don’t even answer that. I’m not getting into a back and forth with you on this

I’m telling you even in your imagined constructed context, there was opposition to slavery. Especially from the enslaved and abolitionists.

You’re doing an erasure of that opposition by implying that everyone was in favour of slavery.

Once again, you’re dumb and doing a disservice to your ancestors - who are probably cursing you right now

The most perplexing question abut American slavery, which has never been altogether explained, and which indeed most Americans hardly know exists, has been stated by Nathan Glazer as follows: "Why was American slavery the most awful the world has ever known?" The only thing that can be said with certainty is that this is true: it was.

American slavery was profoundly different from, and in its lasting effects on individuals and their children, indescribably worse than, any recorded servitude, ancient or modern.

Here’s the thing, it boils down to when WHITE people considered something racist, and wrong. It never mattered what we thought was wrong or racist. It was about what THEY thought, and their values.

So to say, “That’s just the way it was back then”, exposes them thinking their lives are the only ones that matter.

Could you kidnap white Americans, and sell them to a plantation like free black people? Free black Americans could be kidnapped, and sold into slavery.

These white people know they wouldn't be shyt without racism and slavery.

Don't expect them to be honest.

Thoughts?

Such a horrible, horrible fukking argument.

fukk Bill Maher.

Totally overlooks how systems have persisted to this day to destroy black lives.

Also how about actually TELLING the historical truth. Americans can't even fathom explaining what was done during slavery. fukk him.

I guess his angle is slavery is not about a superiority complex of skin color but about the conquers and the conquered.:francis:

Hebrew slaves built the pyramids.

Roman slaves built Rome.

Asian slaves built the great wall of china.

Black African slaves built America.

But the only difference is we still have systematic racism in America based on the superiority complex of skin color.
The pyramids were not built by Hebrew slaves. The people who built the pyramids were artisans and were paid to do it.

No, enslaved people didn't build the Pyramids of Giza

So let's stop giving credit for that where credit is not due.

For most of my life I tried to believe that racism was dying.

Then Trump.

Now I feel that most white people are still racist. 2/3 by my math.

Maher, Vlad, Adam 22, Rogan and other "liberal" white media figures also seem to have shown their asses in the past few years and I have stopped watching them.

It's like it's impossible for them to truly understand us. They feel so superior that their whole approach is like them talking to a pet. People "like" their pets but they lock them up, beat them, chop off ears and tails. So "like" is not nearly enough.

Yea, you are not alone. Most generations of our people feel that the new generation is not as racist as the old. Mainly because the new generation participates in our culture, and talks about how we are treated poorly and such. In the end, each generation finds out that the new is the same as the old, and also that the racists do understand us they just are determined to maintain their perceived superiority over us.

Liberals & Conservatives are racists, just that one views you as lesser and in need of their guidance (Liberals) and the other views you as lesser and should be openly their servants (Conservatives). Neither one considers you an equal, unless you demonstrate that you are without a doubt actually superior to them. Then they feel you are almost an equal and second to them. If you do not accept that designation, they (no matter them being Liberal or Conservative) will become resentful towards you not recognizing what they consider to be their obvious superiority over you. They will also become envious, because they feel you are actually better than them, but they will make like it is a natural gift instead of it being your own hard work.
