Cacs push the "everyone did it" excuse to avoid responsibility for what they did in making the slave trade far worse. Because they don't want to view themselves as immoral trash. But they were.

And Maher is definitely an idiot who would be the first in the camps if some of these conservative cacs had their way. He seems to forget that as do some of the c00n Blacks.

Anything to justify not paying reparations to black folks I see...:francis:
That's really what it boils down. "Africans sold y'all into slavery!" That's true but it still doesn't absolve the United States for their involvement in the slave trade and Jim Crow, redlining, mass incarnation, the war on drugs, etc.

Cut the check to ADOS when it comes reparations!:childplease:

Everyone is saying whites are saying everyone has slaves to repudiate themselves from any accountability.

I disagree, I think it’s the same as when whites say “we let immigrants in this country” or “go back to your country”.
They say this because they don’t know or realize this ain’t their country.

Everything you all here know about the transatlantic slave trade did you learn that in school or by yourself?

Historians of American slavery often distinguish between a “society with slaves” (which is historically common) and a “slave society” in which slavery formed the basis of a political and economic system (which is historically rare).

But how often do you hear about that in school?

And uninformed

Yeah, I remember this segment, whenever he slips up and invites a guest that highlights what he is wrong about, he just turns it into a joke and downplays whatever they are saying. And you would be hard pressed finding older people that don't swear by him.

Alright.

If people want to twist things and say "everyone owned slaves, it wasn't that bad or a big deal back then" that's absolutely disingenuous and bullshyt. And that needs to be called out.

I agree with you.

But what I'm saying is, times and people are complex and if we're going to look at history we have to assign the best possible context, right? Like, I really don't think this is a controversial thing to say. Alexander the Great massacred hundreds of thousands of people, right? A horrific and scumbag thing by any measure. But he was also a military genius, right? Like, both things can be true, right? That's all I'm trying to say. Context and nuance matters. That doesn't mean I'm ignoring or absolving bad shyt that people have done in the past.

Maybe Dave Chappelle put it more simply:

It's complicated.
"And we'd both be right..."

:yeshrug:

The part you’re simplifying is why are we looking at history.

You can look back at history for ideas and critic to build something better. We are able to recognize the difficulties and lack of access to still build fantastic monuments and acknowledge the horrific conditions used to make them or stealing.

The thing about slavery is there’s this need to absolve or distance the individual or society from it.

Lots of people had slavery systems but not all slavery systems were the same. That’s not what’s being critiqued. It’s all being lumped together “ everyone did it” which is the exact opposite of historical understanding

Wtf they know what they did, they know how this country was birthed. :francis:

History in school is watered down, no denying, but in the south, we was definitely taught the evils that was committed in this country.

Unfortunately Krystal Ball didn’t call him out on it. She said they only have a short time to talk so she was trying to get out as much info as possible.

But this happens all the time. Maher will say dumb shyt and wait for the audience to clap.

He keeps saying progressives will help republicans get elected, but his jokes and segments during the trump campaign helped more than anything. And his heel turn is making him look stupid.

Dude is missing nuance

Also people back then knew it was wrong, even some founding fathers

Should we not judge Napoleon for saying the March of the blacks must be halted forever?

Ok I wasn’t educated in the south, that was just the impression I got.
If they do know then I don’t know why they don’t get it.

300 murders a year
This would be true. Which is why I don't harbor personal animosity towards African tribes for being apart of slave trading. The Han and Qing dynasties enslaved other Asians, Roman's enslaved dam near all of Europe. The Germans killed millions of other whites. Indians killed each other etc.

But this is a slick deflection point attempting to be picked up by white society and their c00n minions. The fact is what took place with black Africans in the western hemisphere and in parts of Africa as it pertains to what Leopold and the Arabs did to continental Africans took inhumane to a whole nother level. Furthermore the subsequent systemic abusive policies what would follow chattel slavery also heavily contributed to black Americans status in this country including the Klan mauling hundreds of black towns and villages following the compromise of 1877, Jim crow which we still suffer from today, redlining and gerrymandering and redistricting which harmed our political power and our ability to create economic opportunities, stolen farm land illegal land seizures, failed urban renewal programs, welfare systems and a death blow with the crack era which was followed by abusive policing and military style policing criminalizing black people. No one ever said slavery was the only issue here.

He isn't to be taken seriously on politics, especially predictions. I haven't seen anything by him since the Krystal Ball segment, but if he is suggesting that, he hasn't been paying attention to any data since May, which wouldn't surprise me. And I wouldn't call it a heel turn, he has always been moderate/libertarian, more so libertarian, if the Republicans weren't they way they were on social issues, he would be voting Republican for the fiscal aspect. But yeah, he is going a bit scorched earth on genz/progressives, of course, he clearly doesn't care, likely doesn't even consider, the impact his show has on people.

Did they have slaves in the United States, then terrorize the former slaves, and make them second class citizens decades after being forced to free them?

This is what black people need to stick to when speaking on reperations. Between that and the crack epidemic/CIA/Contra connection. Im really not sure why we like to zero in on slavery so much. There are many documented things that have been done to black people other than slavery.
