That isn't always going to happen though and as a manager you get to move up and can eventually get up to director and VP levels. You're not doing that relying on Certs.

Anyways, you don't want to get into management, that's completely fine. I was just saying that Certs limit you whereas a degree does not...obviously you have to put the work in but you'll get the benefit of the doubt with that degree. A lot of spots you're not even getting a call without a degree.
Yeah that is fine, but i could not deal with the shyt managers go through. If i am getting flak for something 99% it is my fault and if it is not, i can easily show why it is not. As a manager you are always getting shyt by middle to upper management because deadlines are not being met, even if it is not anything to do with them. Or getting stressed because somebody above them had unrealistic goals for the year given the resources and passing the blame to them for the failure.

It is way to much politics in management and i could not deal with it. I have much more flexibility where i am in terms of being an engineer.

I.T. is it. It’s a long game though. I really RECOMMEND INTERNING FOR A POSITION YOU WANT because if you pull up with a resume with minimal to no experience or if they pop a question at you about cybersecurity or system admin or server admin or cloud admin and you say something dumb they will not hire you.

Start from the bottom, which is help desk, but do not get stuck. Work your way up. Ask your employers about roles or intern like I said.

Also double dip. I’m in school for cybersecurity and I can do information security officer work but I have exceptional experience in cloud administration. Guess how many offers I get a day?

The most important thing is to get your foot in the door and then you can impress. The barrier though is getting your foot in the door. HR won't even pass your shyt to the hiring manager if you don't at least have a degree.

While what you're saying is right...my suggetion is get the degree, then impress. Oh and co-op/internship is a must.
You stated more succinctly that I did. This is the main problem and it gets glossed over, especially as a black male trying to break through.

:wow: the degree factor is so underrated.

And the benefit of the doubt is real, even as a black man.

If you have a compu sci, it degree, cybersecurity degree. Certs may not be necessary for you

All the higher ups do not prioritize certs.

Also we had a lot of folks who have certs but end up not knowing wtf they are talking about too.

Becareful about certs.

If you are going to get a get a cert, look into offensive security

These are the certs to aim for.

You will eat for the rest of your days with just an oscp

I hear you...I've been pushed in that direction and said...Nah!

With a Comp Sci degree I wouldn't even waste my time with Certs... The CompSci degree already tells management that you have the capacity to learn and that's really what it's all about. Nikkaz with Comp Sci, Comp Engineering degrees aren't talking about Certs. We don't even talk about no damn Certs at work. Look at resumes and don't even look at Certs. Quite frankly I don't recall seeing them really. But the applicants have Cop Sci/Comp Engineering degrees.

You're not moving up into management with CERTs. All Certs to is help you get your foot in the door for specialized shyt. You need the Cert and experience. With the degree you are already ahead. It shortens the amount of time you need to grind. You can leap frog the Cert cats. Would always encourage going for the degree. It provides a much higher ceiling and floor.

youre preaching to the choir breh...ive been in this IT world for 17 years..ive been paid my dues

Yea as for me I might have to be open to the DMV area cause I have an MPA which deals with more policy, risk, compliance, regulatory, governance, and auditing in federal government and policy organizations.

Jobs look more plentiful in that region for me and it’s only 4 hours away
My cousin has a similar background and moved to the DMV.

DMV is pretty much your only option. Head there asap. Take an Amtrak to NYC when youre up to it.
